In one narration the words are: Khaythamah narrates this from his father: In the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) my father's name was Aziz, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named him Abd al-Rahman.
Ahmad recorded it with various chains whose narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, but the first two narrations apparently appear to be mursal.

Sabrah bin Abi Sabrah narrates from his father that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: How many children do you have? He said: So-and-so, so-and-so, and Abd al-Uzza. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is Abd al-Rahman; among your names, the one most deserving to be given (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) the best of your names is this (that is, Abd al-Rahman), if you give names." After that the narrator mentioned the complete hadith.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains al-Hajjaj bin Artah, in whom there is weakness. The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
