Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! When will we abandon enjoining good and forbidding evil, when these two are the chiefs of the deeds of the righteous? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (You will abandon them) when there befalls you the same thing that befell the Children of Israel. I said: O Messenger of Allah! What befell the Children of Israel? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When your best people practise mudahanah (compromise) before your sinful people (that is, they show the opposite of what is in their hearts), knowledge passes to your worst people, and kingship passes to your young ones, then at that time trials will envelop you, which will attack, and you will be attacked."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Ammar bin Sayf, whom al-Ijli and others declared thiqah (trustworthy) and a group declared da'if (weak); the rest of its narrators are thiqat, and there is disagreement about some of them.

Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it; its chain contains Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the last times there will soon come people whose faces will be like the faces of human beings and whose hearts will be like the hearts of devils. They will be like ravenous wolves; there will be no mercy in their hearts. They will shed much blood and will not refrain from anything vile. If you follow them, they will put you behind them, and if you hide from them, they will backbite you. If they speak to you, they will lie to you; if you entrust them, they will betray you. Their children will be wicked, their young men cunning, and their old men will not enjoin good nor forbid evil. Seeking honour through them will in reality be humiliation, and trying to obtain what (wealth and the like) they possess will be poverty. The forbearing person among them will be misguided, the one who enjoins good among them will be accused, the believer among them will be weak, and the sinner among them will hold a prominent position. Among them the Sunnah will be innovation, and innovation will be Sunnah. At that time Allah Almighty will set over them the worst of them; then their righteous will supplicate, but it will not be answered."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Muhammad bin Mu'awiyah al-Naysaburi, and he is matruk (abandoned).
