Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Abdullah bin Umar! What will become of you when you remain among the dregs of people, whose covenants and trusts have become mixed up, who have fallen into discord and become like this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his fingers. He asked: O Messenger of Allah! What should one do then? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Accept what you recognise as good, leave what you regard as munkar (or evil), devote yourself particularly to your own self, and leave the people (to their condition)!"
Abu Ya'la recorded it from his teacher Sufyan bin Waki', and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while we were sitting in the gathering of Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and his two sons. He said: What do you think, if you are left until a time when only the dregs of people remain, whose covenants and vows have become mixed up and entangled with one another, and they have become like this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this while interlacing his fingers. The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take what you recognise as good, abandon what seems munkar (evil) to you, let each one of you take particular care of himself, and leave the general affairs of the people (to their condition)."
