Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Forty Companions had gathered and were deliberating about the decree and compulsion (jabr); among them were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The Trustworthy Spirit, Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him), descended and said: O Sayyiduna Muhammad! Go out to your Ummah, for they have become involved in something new. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them at a time at which he did not normally come to those people, and the people were surprised at this. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, his colour had changed and his cheeks had reddened, and it seemed as if pomegranate seeds had been burst upon him (that is, his face had turned red). The people quickly got up and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), their palms and forearms trembling. They said: We repent to Allah and His Messenger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Woe to you! You were about to make it (punishment) binding upon yourselves. The Trustworthy Spirit came to me and said: O Sayyiduna Muhammad! Go out to your Ummah, for they have introduced something new.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Yazid bin Rabi'ah al-Rahbi, who is matruk (abandoned), and Ibn Adi said: I hope there is no harm in him.

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda, Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa', Sayyiduna Abu Umamah and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them all) narrate: We were in a gathering with some people from among the Jews, and we were discussing the decree. Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out in a state of anger; he had creased his forehead and displeasure was showing on his face. Then he said: "Stop! O Ummah of Muhammad! Fear Allah! There are two deep, wide-mouthed, dark valleys; do not kindle the intensity of the Fire against yourselves." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the Jews to get up. Then he stood, spread out his right hand and kept his left hand closed, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is a writing from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, concerning the names of the people of Paradise, and the names of their fathers, their mothers and their clans. Your Lord has finished, your Lord has finished, your Lord has finished." Then he spread out his left hand, and pointing to it he said: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is a writing from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, in which are the names of the people of Hell, and the names of their fathers, their mothers and their clans. Your Lord has finished, your Lord has finished, your Lord has finished. Have I left you without excuse? Have I warned you? O Allah, I have conveyed."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Abdullah bin Yazid bin Adam, about whom Ahmad said: His narrated hadiths are mawdu' (fabricated).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the door of the house, intending to go to the chamber. He heard the voices of some people who were arguing about destiny (qadar) and saying: "Did Allah Almighty not say such-and-such? Did Allah Almighty not say such-and-such?" The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) opened the door, and it seemed (from the intensity of his anger) as though pomegranate seeds had been burst upon his face. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is this what you have been commanded? Is this what is wanted of you? Those before you were destroyed only because of things like this: they set one part of the Book of Allah Almighty against another. Whatever Allah Almighty commands you, follow it, and whatever He has forbidden you, refrain from it!" The narrator says: After that, no one was ever heard speaking about destiny, until the time of Ma'bad al-Juhani came (and he began this), and al-Hajjaj seized him and had him killed.
