Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not know of the end of a surah until 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) was revealed. When 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' was revealed, he would know that the surah had ended and that now the next surah would begin afresh.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud transmitted this part of the narration: "He would not know the end of the surah until 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' was revealed."
Al-Bazzar recorded it with two chains, the narrators of one of which are the narrators of the Sahih. Some hadiths related to this topic have already passed in the Book of Prayer.

Sayyiduna Ibn Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he had just passed water (that is, he had come from relieving himself). I said: 'Al-salamu alayka ya Rasul Allah (Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah)!' He did not answer me. I said: O Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you! He did not answer me. I said: O Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you! He did not answer me. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went off walking, and I was behind him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered his lodging, and I entered the mosque. I was sitting worried and grieved when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to me, having performed ablution. He said: Upon you too be peace and the mercy of Allah; upon you too be peace and the mercy of Allah; and upon you too be peace and the mercy of Allah. Then he said: O Abdullah bin Jabir, shall I not tell you of the best surah in the Qur'an? I said: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite "All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds", until he had recited the whole surah.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, who had a poor memory; his hadith is hasan (good). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abdullah bin Shaqiq narrates: He was informed by the person who heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) speaking: He was at that time in Wadi al-Qura, riding his horse, and a man from Bulqin asked him. He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Who are these people? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These are the people upon whom wrath descended; and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed towards the Jews. He asked: Who are these people? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These are the astray; by them the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant the Christians. Then a man came to him and said: Your slave so-and-so has attained martyrdom (the narrator is in doubt about one word here, but the meaning is the same). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! Rather, he will be dragged towards Hell because of the cloak ('aba'ah) that he took by way of misappropriation.
