عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَعَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ أَنَّ رَايَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - كَانَتْ سَوْدَاءَ وَلِوَاءَهُ أَبْيَضَ .
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَفِيهِ حَيَّانُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ الذَّهَبِيُّ : بَيَّضَ لَهُ ابْنُ أَبِي حَاتِمٍ فَهُوَ مَجْهُولٌ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِ أَبِي يَعْلَى ثِقَاتٌ .
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَفِيهِ حَيَّانُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ الذَّهَبِيُّ : بَيَّضَ لَهُ ابْنُ أَبِي حَاتِمٍ فَهُوَ مَجْهُولٌ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِ أَبِي يَعْلَى ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate: The small flag of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was black and his large flag was white.
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Hayyan bin Ubaydullah. Al-Dhahabi said: Ibn Abi Hatim left his entry blank (recorded nothing about him), so he is majhul (unknown). The remaining narrators of Abu Ya'la are thiqat (trustworthy).
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Hayyan bin Ubaydullah. Al-Dhahabi said: Ibn Abi Hatim left his entry blank (recorded nothing about him), so he is majhul (unknown). The remaining narrators of Abu Ya'la are thiqat (trustworthy).

رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَفِيهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ اللَّيْثِ الْهَدَادِيُّ وَلَمْ أَعْرِفْهُ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .

Sayyiduna Mazidah al-Abdi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had small flags made for the Ansar, and he had them made yellow.

وَعَنْ كُرَيْزِ بْنِ سَامَةَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَقَدَ رَايَةً لِبَنِي سُلَيْمٍ حَمْرَاءَ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَفِيهِ مَنْ لَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمْ .

Sayyiduna Kurayz bin Samah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a red small flag tied for Banu Sulaym.

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَايَةَ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - كَانَتْ تَكُونُ مَعَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، وَرَايَةَ الْأَنْصَارِ مَعَ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ ، وَكَانَ إِذَا اسْتَحَرَّ الْقِتَالُ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - مِمَّا يَكُونُ تَحْتَ رَايَةِ الْأَنْصَارِ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ غَيْرَ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ زُفَرَ الشَّامِيِّ وَهُوَ ثِقَةٌ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The particular flag of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be with Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and the flag of the Ansar used to be with Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him). When the fighting became intense, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be with those who were under the flag of the Ansar.

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنْ عَلِيًّا كَانَ صَاحِبَ رَايَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ ، وَقَيْسَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ صَاحِبَ رَايَةِ عَلِيٍّ ، وَصَاحِبُ رَايَةِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ عَلِيٌّ فِي الْمُوَاطِنِ كُلِّهَا .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ وَالْكَبِيرِ وَفِيهِ أَبُو شَيْبَةَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Badr, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the flag-bearer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was the flag-bearer of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (the sentence is like this in the printed edition, but perhaps the original sentence was: and Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was the flag-bearer of the Ansar), and on every occasion the flag-bearer of the Muhajirun was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

وَعَنْ مُحَارِبٍ قَالَ : كَتَبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى زِيَادٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْعَدُوَّ لَا يَظْهَرُ عَلَى قَوْمٍ لِوَاؤُهُمْ - أَوْ قَالَ : رَايَتُهُمْ - مَعَ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ " .

Muharib narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Ziyad that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The enemy will not prevail over any people whose small flag (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) large flag is with a man from Banu Bakr bin Wa'il."
