Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a horse in the path of Allah. Then he found a horse from that horse's offspring being sold, and he was forbidden from buying it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Al-Bazzar also recorded it.

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was given a she-camel in the path of Allah, and I intended to buy an animal from that she-camel's offspring (one word differs here, but the meaning is the same). I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he said: "Leave her; on the Day of Resurrection she and all her offspring will come in your scale." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A hadith is reported from him in the "Sahih" which concerns buying the animal given in charity itself, not buying anything from its offspring.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Mu'ammal bin Isma'il, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) called him da'if (weak).

In one narration the wording is: Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I gave a horse in the path of Allah. Later I saw it being sold in the market for a small price; it had become weak and worn out, and I recognised its forelock. The narrator says: After that he mentioned the report as before. Al-Tabarani recorded all of these narrations in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The chain of the first narration contains a narrator, Jabir al-Ju'fi, who is da'if (weak); Shu'bah and al-Thawri declared him thiqah (trustworthy). The chain of the second narration is "mursal" (missing the Companion), and likewise the chain of the first narration is also "mursal".
