عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ : أَوْلَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَلَى صَفِيَّةَ ، فَقُلْتُ : أَيُّ شَيْءٍ كَانَ فِي وَلِيمَتِهِ ؟ قَالَ : مَا كَانَ إِلَّا التَّمْرُ ، وَالسَّوِيقُ .

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held a walimah after marrying Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). (The narrator said:) I asked: What was there at that walimah? He said: There was nothing but dates and sawiq (barley meal).

وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ : لَمَّا أُدْخِلَتْ صَفِيَّةُ بِنْتُ حُيَيٍّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فُسْطَاطَهُ حَضَرَهُ نَاسٌ ، وَحَضَرْتُ مَعَهُمْ لِيَكُونَ لِي فِيهِمْ قَسْمٌ ، فَخَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فِي رِدَائِهِ نَحْوٌ مِنْ مُدٍّ وَنِصْفٍ مِنْ تَمْرٍ عَجْوَةٍ قَالَ : " كُلُوا مِنْ وَلِيمَةِ أُمِّكُمْ " .

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and came into the tent of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), some people were present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I too was present with them so that I might also get a share among them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, and he had about one and a half mudd of ajwah dates in his cloak. He said: "Eat from the walimah of your mother."

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: At the walimah of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) served dates and ghee. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say that in the Sahih it is reported that this happened at the walimah of Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), whereas here it is mentioned that it happened at the walimah of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her).

وَعَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ : حَضَرْنَا عُرْسَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، وَفَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَمَا رَأَيْنَا عُرْسًا كَانَ أَحْسَنَ مِنْهُ حُسْنًا . هَيَّأَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - زَبِيبًا وَتَمْرًا فَأَكَلْنَا . وَكَانَ فِرَاشُهَا لَيْلَةَ عُرْسِهَا إِهَابَ كَبْشٍ .

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We attended the wedding of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and we have not seen a better wedding than it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had raisins and dates prepared for us, and we ate them. On that wedding night, her bedding was a ram's skin.

وَعَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ أَنَّ أَبَا أُسَيْدٍ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - تَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً فَدَعَا النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فِي عُرْسِهِ ، فَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ تَقُومُ عَلَيْنَا وَهِيَ الْعَرُوسُ فَسَقَتْنَا نَبِيذَ التَّمْرِ قَدِ انْتَبَذَتْهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَصَفَّتْهُ .

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him), a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), married a woman and invited the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to his wedding. His wife looked after us (that is, she arranged the food and drink) while she was the bride, and she gave us nabidh of dates to drink, which she had prepared the night before and strained.

وَعَنْ أَسْمَاءَ - يَعْنِي بِنْتَ عُمَيْسٍ - قَالَتْ : أَهْدَيْتُ جَدَّتَكِ فَاطِمَةَ إِلَى جَدِّكِ عَلِيٍّ فَمَا كَانَ حَشْوُ فِرَاشِهَا وَوِسَادَتِهَا إِلَّا لِيفٌ ، وَلَقَدْ أَوْلَمَ عَلِيٌّ بِفَاطِمَةَ فَمَا كَانَتْ وَلِيمَةٌ فِي ذَلِكَ الزَّمَانِ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ وَلِيمَتِهِ ؛ رَهَنَ دِرْعَهُ عِنْدَ يَهُودِيٍّ بِشَطْرِ شَعِيرٍ .

Sayyidah Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I escorted your grandmother, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), as a bride to your grandfather, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Her bedding and pillow were stuffed with nothing but palm fibre. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) held the walimah for Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and in that time there was no walimah more excellent than his walimah. He had pawned his armour with a Jew for some barley.

وَعَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ أَنَّ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتَ يَزِيدَ بْنِ السَّكَنِ - إِحْدَى نِسَاءِ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْأَشْهَلِ - دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا يَوْمًا فَقَرَّبَتْ إِلَيْهِ طَعَامًا فَقَالَ : لَا أَشْتَهِيهِ . فَقَالَتْ : إِنِّي قَيَّنْتُ عَائِشَةَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - ، ثُمَّ جِئْتُهُ فَدَعَوْتُهُ لَجِلْوَتِهَا ، فَجَاءَ ، فَجَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِهَا فَأُتِيَ بِعُسِّ لَبَنٍ فَشَرِبَ ، ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهَا [ النَّبَيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ] فَخَفَضَتْ رَأْسَهَا وَاسْتَحْيَتْ . قَالَتْ أَسْمَاءُ : فَانْتَهَرْتُهَا وَقُلْتُ لَهَا : خُذِي مِنْ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - . قَالَتْ : فَأَخَذَتْ ، فَشَرِبَتْ شَيْئًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " أَعْطِي تِرْبَكِ " . قَالَتْ أَسْمَاءُ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، بَلْ خُذْهُ فَاشْرَبْ مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ نَاوِلْنِيهِ مِنْ يَدِكَ ، فَأَخَذَهُ فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِيهِ ، قَالَتْ : فَجَلَسْتُ ، ثُمَّ وَضَعْتُهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتِي ، ثُمَّ طَفِقْتُ أُدِيرُهُ وَأُتْبِعُهُ شَفَتَيَّ لِأُصِيبَ مِنْهُ مَشْرَبَ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِنِسْوَةٍ عِنْدِي : " نَاوِلِيهِنَّ " . فَقُلْنَ : لَا نَشْتَهِيهِ . فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " لَا تَجْمَعْنَ جُوعًا وَكَذِبًا " .
فَهَلْ أَنْتَ مُنْتَهِيًا أَنْ تَقُولَ : لَا نَشْتَهِيهِ ؟ قُلْتُ : أَيْ أُمَّهْ لَا أَعُودُ أَبَدًا .
قُلْتُ : رَوَى ابْنُ مَاجَهْ بَعْضَهُ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ بِنَحْوِهِ وَزَادَ : وَأَبْصَرَ [ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ] عَلَى إِحْدَاهُنَّ سِوَارًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَقَالَ : " يَا هَذِهِ ، أَتُحِبِّينَ أَنْ يُسَوِّرَكِ اللَّهُ مَكَانَهُ سِوَارًا مِنْ نَارٍ ؟ " . فَنَزَعْنَاهُ فَرَمَيْنَا بِهِ فَمَا نَدْرِي أَيْنَ هُوَ حَتَّى السَّاعَةِ . [ ثُمَّ ] قَالَ : [ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ] " : إِنَّمَا يَكْفِي إِحْدَاكُنَّ أَنْ تَتَّخِذَ جُمَانًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ - وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ : سُوَارًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ - ثُمَّ تَأْخُذَ شَيْئًا مِنْ زَعْفَرَانَ فَتُدِيفَهُ ، ثُمَّ تُلَطِّخَهُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَإِذَا هُوَ كَأَنَّهُ ذَهَبٌ " .
وَقَدْ رَوَى قِصَّةَ السِّوَارِ أَبُو دَاوُدَ بِاخْتِصَارٍ كَثِيرٍ . وَشَهْرٌ فِيهِ كَلَامٌ ، وَحَدِيثُهُ حَسَنٌ .
فَهَلْ أَنْتَ مُنْتَهِيًا أَنْ تَقُولَ : لَا نَشْتَهِيهِ ؟ قُلْتُ : أَيْ أُمَّهْ لَا أَعُودُ أَبَدًا .
قُلْتُ : رَوَى ابْنُ مَاجَهْ بَعْضَهُ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ بِنَحْوِهِ وَزَادَ : وَأَبْصَرَ [ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ] عَلَى إِحْدَاهُنَّ سِوَارًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَقَالَ : " يَا هَذِهِ ، أَتُحِبِّينَ أَنْ يُسَوِّرَكِ اللَّهُ مَكَانَهُ سِوَارًا مِنْ نَارٍ ؟ " . فَنَزَعْنَاهُ فَرَمَيْنَا بِهِ فَمَا نَدْرِي أَيْنَ هُوَ حَتَّى السَّاعَةِ . [ ثُمَّ ] قَالَ : [ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ] " : إِنَّمَا يَكْفِي إِحْدَاكُنَّ أَنْ تَتَّخِذَ جُمَانًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ - وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ : سُوَارًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ - ثُمَّ تَأْخُذَ شَيْئًا مِنْ زَعْفَرَانَ فَتُدِيفَهُ ، ثُمَّ تُلَطِّخَهُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَإِذَا هُوَ كَأَنَّهُ ذَهَبٌ " .
وَقَدْ رَوَى قِصَّةَ السِّوَارِ أَبُو دَاوُدَ بِاخْتِصَارٍ كَثِيرٍ . وَشَهْرٌ فِيهِ كَلَامٌ ، وَحَدِيثُهُ حَسَنٌ .
Shahr bin Hawshab said: Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid bin al-Sakan (may Allah be pleased with her), who was one of the women of Banu Abd al-Ashhal: one day Shahr came to visit her. That lady placed food before him, and he said: I have no desire for it. That lady said: I prepared Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) for her wedding to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and called him so that he would come and sit with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and sat beside Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then a vessel of milk was brought, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held it out to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), but she lowered her head and felt shy. Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I scolded her and said to her: Take it from the hand of the Messenger of Allah. Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: She took it and drank some. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give some to your companion as well." Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, rather, you take it and drink from it, and then hand it to me with your blessed hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and drank from it, then he handed it to me. Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I sat down and placed it on my knee, then I turned it around and put my lips on the place from which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had drunk. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about the women who were with me: "Give it to them too!" Those women said: We have no desire for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not combine hunger and untruthfulness."
(After narrating this, Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Shahr bin Hawshab:) So will you stop saying, 'We have no desire for it'? I said: O mother, I will never do that again. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded part of this report.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, adding these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a gold bracelet on the hand of one of those women and said: "O woman! Would you like Allah Almighty to put on you, in its place, a bracelet made of fire?" The woman narrator said: So we took off our jewellery and threw it away, and until now we do not know where it is. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is enough for any one of you women to have a silver bangle made, then take a little saffron, moisten it and apply it to it, and it will become like gold." Abu Dawud recorded the story of the bracelet in a much abridged form. There is some criticism of the narrator named Shahr, and his hadith is hasan (good).

وَعَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ قَالَتْ : كُنْتُ صَاحِبَةَ عَائِشَةَ الَّتِي هَيَّأَتْهَا وَأَدْخَلَتْهَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَمَعِي نِسْوَةٌ قَالَتْ : فَوَاللَّهِ مَا وَجَدْنَا عِنْدَهُ قِرًى إِلَّا قَدَحًا مِنْ لَبَنٍ ، فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ عَائِشَةَ فَاسْتَحْيَتِ الْجَارِيَةُ ، فَقُلْنَا : لَا تَرُدِّي يَدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - خُذِي مِنْهُ ، فَأَخَذَتْهُ عَلَى حَيَاءٍ ، فَشَرِبَتْ مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " نَاوِلِي صَوَاحِبَكِ " . فَقُلْنَا : لَا نَشْتَهِيهِ . فَقَالَ : " لَا تَجْمَعْنَ جُوعًا وَكَذِبًا " . قَالَتْ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنْ قَالَتْ إِحْدَانَا لِشَيْءٍ تَشْتَهِيهِ : لَا أَشْتَهِيهِ يُعَدُّ ذَلِكَ كَذِبًا ؟ قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْكَذِبَ يُكْتَبُ كَذِبًا حَتَّى تُكْتَبَ الْكُذَيْبَةُ كُذَيْبَةً " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَفِيهِ أَبُو شَدَّادٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ رَوَى عَنْهُ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، وَيُونُسُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ إِلَّا أَنَّ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتَ عُمَيْسٍ كَانَتْ بِأَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ مَعَ زَوْجِهَا جَعْفَرٍ حِينَ تَزَوَّجَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَائِشَةَ ، وَالصَّوَابُ حَدِيثُ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ ، وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ .
وَرَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الصَّغِيرِ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ ضَعِيفٌ .

Sayyidah Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I was one of the women with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who prepared her and escorted her as a bride to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and some other women were with me as well. Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: By Allah, we found nothing with him to offer as hospitality except a cup of milk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from it, then he held it out to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she felt shy. We said: Do not turn back the hand of the Messenger of Allah; take it. So she took it shyly and drank from it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give some to your companions as well." We said: We have no desire for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not combine hunger and untruthfulness." Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! If one of us women desires something and then says, 'I have no desire for it,' will this also be counted as a lie? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A lie is written down as a lie, so much so that even a small lie is recorded as a small lie."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Shaddad, who narrated it from Mujahid; Ibn Jurayj and Yunus bin Yazid narrated from him, and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. However, Sayyidah Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) was in the land of Abyssinia with her husband, Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him), at the time of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) marriage to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). The correct view is that the hadith is narrated from Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her), and Allah knows best.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What is the reason for this dye? Have you got married?" He said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you held the walimah?" He said: No! So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed him a nugget of gold the size of a date stone and said: "Hold a walimah, even if it is with one goat (slaughtered for the feast)."

قَالَ أَنَسٌ : حَرَّرْنَاهَا رُبُعَ دِينَارٍ .
قُلْتُ : هُوَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ خَلَا قِيمَةَ النَّوَاةِ .

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), wearing a yellow garment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Mahyam?" (The narrator said:) This is a word used when asking about something. He said: O Messenger of Allah! I have got married. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "For how much (dowry)?" He said: For gold equal to the weight of a date stone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold a walimah, even if it is with one goat (slaughtered for the feast)." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We estimated it at a quarter of a dinar. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This report is mentioned in the Sahih, but without the mention of the value of the date stone.
