Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) proposed marriage to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A wedding must also have a walimah (wedding feast)." So Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Providing a ram is my responsibility. And so-and-so said: Providing such-and-such an amount of millet is my responsibility.
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Karim bin Salit, whom no one has criticised; he is mastur (of unestablished status), and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Providing food on one day at a wedding is Sunnah, providing it for two days is extra, and providing it for three days is showing off and seeking reputation."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Arzami, and he is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The walimah on the first day is a right, on the second day it is a virtue, and on the third day it is showing off and seeking reputation; and whoever shows off, Allah Almighty will expose his showing off.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, and he suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) in his memory.
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) and made her emancipation her dowry (mahr), and he held the walimah for three days. He had a leather mat spread out, which Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) had brought, and he had dried cheese (aqit) and dates placed on it, and he fed the people for three days. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This report is mentioned in the Sahih in abridged form regarding the days (that is, the three days are not mentioned).
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Isa bin Abi Isa Mahan; he is thiqah (trustworthy), and there is some criticism of him that does no harm.
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not hold a walimah for any of his wives (after marrying her) except for Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her); only (after marrying) her did this happen.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except the narrator named Umar bin al-Khattab, the teacher of al-Bazzar; he is thiqah (trustworthy), and no one has criticised him.
