Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Quraysh sought permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning the 'atirah. They said: O Messenger of Allah! We used to (sacrifice animals) as 'atirah in Rajab. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: Do you want to perform 'atirah like the 'atirah of the Jahiliyyah? Whoever among you wishes to slaughter for Allah, and to eat of it and also give in charity, let him do so. The narrator says: Their manner of performing 'atirah was that they would slaughter animals, then go to the blood of their slaughtered animals and smear it on the heads of their idols.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin Abi Habibah, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy), while people declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from the Ansar came to him, that is, to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and asked him about a man: what is lawful for him, and what is unlawful for him regarding his wealth, his sacrificial animals, his other livestock, his 'atirah and his fara', the young born to his camels or goats. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: I make the good things lawful for you and make the foul things unlawful for you, except that if you become in need of food, then eat of it enough to become free of need of it. At that time a man asked him; he said: What is the measure of poverty, such that when I reach it I may eat it? Or what is the prosperity that will make me free of need of it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you hope that an animal will give birth, then get by on the meat of your animals until it is born; when you hope that a cloud will bring rain, then get by on the meat of your livestock; and when you hope that provisions will come, then also get by on the meat of your animals (until they arrive). But if you hope for none of these, then keep feeding your family whatever you see fit, until you become free of need of it! The Bedouin said: What is the limit of prosperity, such that when I find it I will leave that thing? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you have given your family their fill of milk, then avoid the food that has been made unlawful for you. As for your wealth, all of it is easy for you; nothing in it is unlawful, except that the young born to your camel that is a fara', or the young born to your goat that is a fara', is a different matter: your animals will nourish it until it becomes independent; then, if you wish, feed it to your family, and if you wish, give its meat in charity. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him to slaughter animals from the goats as 'atirah: one animal from every hundred goats. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: I found this report like this in my original copy.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its chain is hasan (good).
