Anas bin Sirin narrated: We came to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) on a Thursday. He called for his dining cloth and invited the people to eat. Some of those present ate and some did not eat. Then they came to him on a Monday and the same thing happened: he called for his dining cloth and invited the people to eat; some of them ate and some did not. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: "Perhaps you are followers of Monday, and perhaps you are followers of Thursday? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to keep (voluntary) fasts and would not leave off fasting, until we would think that now the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not leave any voluntary fast; then he would start leaving voluntary fasts and would not fast, until we would think that he would not keep any voluntary fast this year. The most beloved fasts to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were those of Sha'ban." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this report is narrated in the Sahih.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Uthman bin Rashid al-Thaqafi, and he is da'if (weak).
