Sayyidah Aishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), while mentioning (the affair of) Khaybar, narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Jews, and he would estimate the yield of their date palms; this was done when the dates became fit to eat, before (any of them) were eaten. Then they would give the Jews the choice: if they wished, they could take the produce according to that estimate, or else hand over that much produce to them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the yield to be estimated (in advance) so that the zakah could be counted before the fruit was picked and dispersed.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Abu Dawud recorded it in abridged form, mentioning zakah and other matters.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Ahmad's narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that in one narration he said: "from Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Shihab", and in another narration he said: "Ibn Jurayj says: I was told this from Ibn Shihab."
