Abu Tamim al-Jayshani says: I heard Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has granted you an additional prayer, so offer it between Isha and the morning prayer: it is the witr, it is the witr." Behold! That narrator was Sayyiduna Abu Basrah al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Tamim says: Once Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) and I were sitting. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) took hold of my hand, and we walked to Sayyiduna Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and we found him at the door next to the door of Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Basrah, did you hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has granted you an additional prayer, so offer it between Isha and the morning prayer: it is the witr, it is the witr"? Sayyiduna Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yes. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Did you yourself hear this from the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: Yes.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it. Ahmad recorded it with two chains, one of which has narrators who are the narrators of the Sahih, except Ahmad's teacher Ali bin Ishaq al-Sulami, who is nonetheless thiqah (trustworthy).

Abd al-Rahman bin Rafi' al-Tanukhi, the judge of Africa (Ifriqiyah), says: Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Syria, and the people of Syria did not offer the witr. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him): What is the reason? I do not see the people of Syria offering the witr. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is it obligatory (wajib) upon them? Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yes. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "My Lord has granted me an additional prayer, and that is the witr, which is to be offered in the time between Isha and true dawn."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Ubaydullah bin Zahr, and he is da'if (weak) and has been accused (muttaham). Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had not become governor during the lifetime of Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).

Imam Ahmad has also recorded this narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has forbidden to my Ummah wine, gambling, mizr (a particular kind of intoxicating drink made from wheat, barley or honey), qinnin (meaning the 'ud, a particular kind of musical instrument) and kubah (according to one view this means backgammon, and according to another view it means the drum), and He has granted me the witr prayer in addition."
Neither of the two chains of this narration is authentic, since the first chain contains a narrator, al-Muthanna bin al-Sabbah, who is da'if (weak), while the second chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Rafi', who is majhul (unknown).
