Sayyidah Aishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: Once I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a Jewish man asked permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission. He said: "Al-samu alayka" (that is, may death come upon you). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And upon you" (that is, may it come upon you too). After this the narrator mentioned the whole hadith, in which, further on, are these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These people do not envy us for anything as much as they envy us for Friday (Jumu'ah), to which Allah Almighty guided us while they went astray from it; and for the qiblah, to which Allah Almighty guided us while they went astray from it; and for our saying 'Amin' behind the imam." This complete hadith has already appeared in the chapter on the qiblah, and the discussion of it has also appeared there.

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of one of his wives, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was also present. Some Jews came to him and said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), may death come upon you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And upon you." They sat down and began to talk. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) understood the manner of their greeting, the words with which they had greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) became intensely angry; she kept watching, and then, when she could no longer control herself, she said: "Rather, may death come upon you, and the anger of Allah and His curse be upon you! Is this how you greet the Prophet of Allah?" Then those people left, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Why did you say what you said?" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Did you not hear how they greeted you? By Allah, when I heard this greeting of theirs, I could not control myself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no problem. Did you not see how I replied to them? The Jews are a people who have grown weary of their religion, and they are an envious people. They do not envy the Muslims for anything more than three things: returning the greeting of salam, straightening the rows, and their (that is, the Muslims') saying 'Amin' behind the imam in the obligatory prayer."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the imam recites 'not of those who earned anger, nor of those who went astray', and those behind him say 'Amin', and the 'Amin' of the people of the heavens (that is, the angels) and the people of the earth (that is, human beings) coincides, Allah Almighty will forgive the servant his past sins." He also said: "The example of the one who does not say 'Amin' is like a man who takes part in a military expedition with some people. They cast lots, and the lots of those people come out but his does not. He says: 'What is the reason that my share has not come out?' The other person says: 'Because you did not say Amin.'" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of it is reported in the Sahih.
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is thiqah (trustworthy) and a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), and he has narrated it with 'an (mu'an'an).

She said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgement," until, when he recited this verse: "not of those who earned anger, nor of those who went astray," he said "Amin", so that I heard it even though I was in the women's row.
