وَعَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - جَلَسَ فِي بَيْتٍ مِنْ بُيُوتِ أَزْوَاجِهِ وَعَائِشَةُ ، عِنْدَهُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالُوا : السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ قَالَ : " وَعَلَيْكُمْ " ، فَجَلَسُوا فَتَحَدَّثُوا وَقَدْ فَهِمَتْ عَائِشَةُ تَحِيَّتَهُمُ الَّتِي حَيَّوْا بِهَا النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَاسْتَجْمَعَتْ غَضَبًا وَتَبَصَّرَتْ فَلَمْ تَمْلِكْ غَيْظَهَا فَقَالَتْ : بَلْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَغَضَبُ اللَّهِ وَلَعْنَتُهُ بِهَذَا تُحَيُّونَ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " مَا حَمَلَكِ عَلَى مَا قُلْتِ ؟ " قَالَتْ : أَوَ لَمَ تَسْمَعْ كَيْفَ حَيَّوْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ وَاللَّهِ مَا مَلَكْتُ نَفْسِي حِينَ سَمِعْتُ تَحِيَّتَهُمْ إِيَّاكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " لَا جَرَمَ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتِ رَدَدْتِ عَلَيْهِمْ ، إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ قَوْمٌ سَئِمُوا دِينَهُمْ وَهُمْ قَوْمُ حَسَدٍ ، وَلَمْ يَحْسُدُوا الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى أَفْضَلِ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ : رَدُّ السَّلَامِ ، وَإِقَامَةُ الصُّفُوفِ ، وَقَوْلُهُمْ خَلْفَ إِمَامِهِمْ فِي الْمَكْتُوبَةِ : آمِينَ " .

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of one of his wives, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was also present. Some Jews came to him and said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), may death come upon you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And upon you." They sat down and began to talk. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) understood the manner of their greeting, the words with which they had greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) became intensely angry; she kept watching, and then, when she could no longer control herself, she said: "Rather, may death come upon you, and the anger of Allah and His curse be upon you! Is this how you greet the Prophet of Allah?" Then those people left, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Why did you say what you said?" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Did you not hear how they greeted you? By Allah, when I heard this greeting of theirs, I could not control myself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no problem. Did you not see how I replied to them? The Jews are a people who have grown weary of their religion, and they are an envious people. They do not envy the Muslims for anything more than three things: returning the greeting of salam, straightening the rows, and their (that is, the Muslims') saying 'Amin' behind the imam in the obligatory prayer."
