Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was a man who slept a great deal. I would offer the Maghrib prayer while wearing my (outdoor) clothes, and still I would fall asleep (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) still I would fall asleep before Isha. I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me permission.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin Abdul Rahman bin Abi Layla, who is da'if (weak) because of his poor memory, and it also contains a narrator who is not named.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sleeping before Isha, nor doing anything idle after Isha; either he was remembering Allah and gaining reward, or he was sleeping and remaining safe. Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: Night-time conversation is for three people: husband and wife, the traveller, or the one who offers the Tahajjud prayer at night.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is to be no conversation after the prayer (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant the Isha prayer), except in the case of one of two kinds of people: one who is praying, or one who is travelling."
Imam Ahmad and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. As for Imam Ahmad and Imam Abu Ya'la, both of them said it is narrated from Khaythamah, from a man, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), while Imam al-Tabarani said it is narrated from Khaythamah, from Ziyad bin Hudayr. The narrators of all these reports are "thiqat (trustworthy)". In one narration Imam Ahmad has it from Khaythamah from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), that is, without mentioning the man in between.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We had set turns for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); one of us would stay the night with him so that, if he had some need or some matter came up at night, he could send us. Then the number of those hoping for reward and of those taking turns grew large. Once we were talking, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us at night and said: What is this conversation? Did I not forbid you from conversing? The narrator says: We said: O Prophet of Allah! We repent to Allah Almighty. After this the narrator mentioned the complete hadith.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
