Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me for water. I came to a tent in which there was a Bedouin woman. I said: The Messenger of Allah is asking for water for ablution; do you have any water? The woman said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for the Messenger of Allah! By Allah, the sky has not shaded, nor has the earth carried, any soul that is more beloved and more honoured to me than his soul. There is a waterskin here, but it is made from the hide of a dead animal, and I do not like to make the Messenger of Allah impure with it. (Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) says:) I went back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. He said: Go back to that woman; if she had tanned this hide, then that (tanning) will make it pure. The narrator says: I went to the woman and mentioned this to her. She said: Yes! By Allah, I did tan it. (Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) says:) So I brought water from it (for the Prophet).
Imam Ahmad recorded this narration, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded part of it; its chain mentions that Ali bin Yazid narrated it from al-Qasim. Both of these narrators have been criticised, and both have also been declared thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water for ablution. It was said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): We can only find water in a waterskin (made from the hide) of a dead (animal). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Had you tanned it? The people replied: Yes! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then bring it! For this (tanning) is the means of purification for it (the hide of the dead animal).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was going out to take part in a battle, and he passed by some dwellings of the Arabs. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent them a message: Is there water for the Messenger of Allah to perform ablution? They replied: The only water we have is in (a waterskin made from) the hide of a dead animal, which we have tanned with milk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent them a message that its tanning is itself the means of purifying it. Then the water was brought, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with it and offered the prayer.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ufayr bin Ma'dan, whose weakness the hadith scholars agree upon.
