Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We had a goat which we used to milk. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) found it missing, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What happened to your goat? The people said: It has died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What did you do with its hide? They said: O Messenger of Allah! We threw it away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Did you not benefit from it? Its tanning would have been its purification, and it would have become lawful just as vinegar made from wine becomes lawful.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; the narrator Faraj bin Fadalah is alone in narrating it, and the majority (of scholars) have declared him "da'if" (weak).
