Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to a place in Madinah called "Buthan". He said: O Anas! Get water ready for me. I got water ready for him. After relieving himself, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards the vessel; meanwhile a cat came and put its mouth into the vessel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped because of it until the cat had drunk the water, and after that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution. I mentioned the matter of the cat to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: O Anas! The cat is part of the household belongings; it does not make anything dirty, nor does it make it impure.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir; its chain contains a narrator, Umar bin Hafs al-Makki, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy); Imam al-Dhahabi says: It is not known who he is.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Whenever a cat passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would tilt the vessel towards it, and it would drink from it, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform ablution with the water it left over.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded this narration, but he did not mention that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would tilt the vessel towards it.
Imam al-Bazzar, and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, recorded this narration, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah reports about his father: Once water for ablution was set out for him, and a cat put its mouth into it. He began to perform ablution with that same water, and the people said: O Abu Qatadah! A cat has put its mouth into it! He said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The cat is one of the household belongings; it is one of the males and females (animals) that come and go among you in your homes."
Imam Ahmad recorded this narration, and it is also mentioned in the "Sunan", but without these words: "The cat is one of the household belongings."
Abdullah narrated this from his father; its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that its chain contains a narrator, Hajjaj bin Artah, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but a mudallis. A hadith about the cat and the dog will come later.
