Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to a place in Madinah called "Buthan". He said: O Anas! Get water ready for me. I got water ready for him. After relieving himself, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards the vessel; meanwhile a cat came and put its mouth into the vessel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped because of it until the cat had drunk the water, and after that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution. I mentioned the matter of the cat to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: O Anas! The cat is part of the household belongings; it does not make anything dirty, nor does it make it impure.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir; its chain contains a narrator, Umar bin Hafs al-Makki, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy); Imam al-Dhahabi says: It is not known who he is.
