Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The religion will prevail, until the traders go (to distant lands) and the seas are travelled in the path of Allah. Then after you there will come people who will learn the Qur'an, and then they will say: Who knows the Qur'an better than us? Who has more understanding than us? Who has more knowledge than us?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to his Companions and said: "Will there be any good in those people?" The people said: No! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those people will be from among you (that is, from this Ummah), and they will be the fuel of the Fire."
Abu Ya'la, al-Bazzar, and Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it; the chain of this report contains Musa bin Ubaydah al-Rabadhi, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Islam will prevail, until the traders travel the seas and the horses go forth in the path of Allah. Then a people will appear who will recite the Qur'an and say: Who knows the Qur'an better than us? Who has more knowledge than us? Who has more understanding (of the religion) than us?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his Companions: "Will there be any good in those people?" The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those people will be from among you (that is, from this Ummah), and those people will be the fuel of the Fire."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and al-Bazzar recorded it; the narrators of al-Bazzar have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up during the night in Makkah and said: "O Allah, have I conveyed (the message)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, and he was a man who sighed much (out of tenderness of heart), and he said: O Allah! Yes! You (peace and blessings be upon him) have conveyed, striven your utmost and given sincere counsel, the result of which was this. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Faith will surely prevail, until disbelief is driven back to its own places, Islam will spread across the seas, and a time will come upon people in which they will acquire the knowledge of the Qur'an; they will learn it and recite it, and then they will say: We have recited and we have acquired knowledge, so who is there who is better than us? Will there be any harm in such people?" The people said: O Messenger of Allah! Who will those people be? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will be from among you (that is, from this Ummah), and they will be the fuel of the Fire."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the case of Hind bint al-Harith al-Khath'amiyyah, who is a Tabi'iyyah, is different: I have not seen anyone declare her trustworthy or criticise her.

Mujahid has narrated this report from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and to my knowledge he must have narrated it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says: I am a scholar, he is ignorant."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is da'if (weak).

Yahya bin Abi Kathir says: Whoever says: I am a scholar, he is ignorant; and whoever says: I am ignorant, he is ignorant; whoever says: I am in Paradise, he is in Hell; and whoever says: I am in Hell, he is in Hell.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir; its chain contains Muhammad bin Abi Ata al-Thaqafi, whom Ahmad declared da'if (weak), saying: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Kitab al-Thiqat. Despite all of this, it is the saying of Yahya (bin Abi Kathir himself), mawquf (stopping) at him.
