Sayyiduna Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the one who teaches people goodness and forgets himself is like the wick of a lamp, which gives light to people and burns itself."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Muhammad bin Jabir al-Suhaymi, who is da'if (weak) because of his poor memory and his mental confusion (ikhtilat).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Many a carrier of knowledge is not himself a scholar; and whoever is not benefited by his knowledge is harmed by his ignorance. Recite the Qur'an as long as it restrains you (from violating the rulings of the Shari'ah); if it does not restrain you (from violating the rulings of the Shari'ah), then you are not (truly) reciting it."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Shahr bin Hawshab, who is da'if (weak), though he has also been declared trustworthy.

Abu Tamimah narrates about Sayyiduna Jundub bin Abdullah al-Azdi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Tamimah narrates: He and I were travelling towards Basrah until we reached a place called "Bayt al-Miskin", which was as far from Basrah as "al-Nawbah" is. He asked: Have you ever studied the Qur'an with anyone? I replied: Yes! He said: When we reach Basrah, bring those people to me. So I brought Salih bin Misrah, Abu Bilal and his grandfather, and Nafi' bin al-Azraq to him; in my view at that time these people were among the most virtuous people of Basrah. Then he began narrating hadith to me from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the scholar who teaches people goodness and forgets himself is like a lamp, which gives light to people and burns itself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "(Let it not happen) that when a person is looking at the gates of Paradise, a handful of blood which he shed unjustly comes between him and Paradise." The narrator says: Then those present began to talk, and they mentioned enjoining good and forbidding evil, while Sayyiduna Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent, listening to them. Then he said: I have never seen people like those of today who are more deserving of salvation, provided they are truthful.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. It has another chain as well, which will come in the chapter on fighting the rebels. The narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to a branch of the tribe of Qays so that I could teach those people the rulings of Islam. They were like wild camels; their attention was scattered, and their whole concern was about goats or camels. I returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ammar! What did you do?" I told him the whole story of those people and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) of their lack of interest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ammar! Shall I not tell you about people more astonishing than them? They will be people who know what these people do not know, and yet they (that is, those who have knowledge) will show the same lack of interest as these people."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Abbad bin Ahmad al-Arzami, about whom al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) says: He is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (the narrator is in doubt about one word here) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was circumambulating the House. I asked: O Messenger of Allah! Who is the worst person? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! I ask You for forgiveness. (Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) and said:) Ask about good, and do not ask about evil! The worst of people are those who are the evil scholars among the people.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains al-Khalil bin Murrah. Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected). Ibn Adi rejected al-Bukhari's (may Allah have mercy on him) statement, and Abu Zur'ah says: He is a righteous shaykh.
