Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 870

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Many a carrier of knowledge is not himself a scholar; and whoever is not benefited by his knowledge is harmed by his ignorance. Recite the Qur'an as long as it restrains you (from violating the rulings of the Shari'ah); if it does not restrain you (from violating the rulings of the Shari'ah), then you are not (truly) reciting it."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Shahr bin Hawshab, who is da'if (weak), though he has also been declared trustworthy.
