عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ - يَعْنِي السُّلَمِيَّ - قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مَنْ كَانَ يُقْرِئُنَا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَأْخُذُونَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَشْرَ آيَاتٍ ، فَلَا يَأْخُذُونَ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأُخْرَى حَتَّى يَعْلَمُوا مَا فِي هَذِهِ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ وَالْعَمَلِ . قَالَ : فَيُعَلِّمُنَا الْعِلْمَ وَالْعَمَلَ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَفِيهِ عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ ، اخْتَلَطَ فِي آخِرِ عُمْرِهِ .

Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami said: The Companion who used to teach us the Qur'an told us that they used to learn ten verses from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and would not take up the next ten verses until they had come to know every aspect of the knowledge and action contained in the first ten. That Companion said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach (both) knowledge and action.

وَعَنْ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ قَالَتْ : كُنْتُ مُجَاوِرَةً أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَرَأَيْتَ إِذَا رَأَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنَّ زَوْجَهَا جَامَعَهَا فِي الْمَنَامِ ، أَتَغْتَسِلُ ؟ فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ : تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكِ أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ ، فَضَحْتِ النِّسَاءَ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ : إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَسْتَحِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ ، وَلَنَا أَنْ نَسْأَلَ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَمَّا أُشْكِلَ عَلَيْنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ نَكُونَ مِنْهُ عَلَى عَمْيَاءَ . فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكِ يَا أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ ، عَلَيْهَا الْغُسْلُ إِذَا وَجَدَتِ الْمَاءَ " فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، وَهَلْ لِلْمَرْأَةِ مَاءٌ ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " فَأَنَّى يُشْبِهُهَا وَلَدُهَا ؟ هُنَّ شَقَائِقُ الرِّجَالِ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَهُوَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ بِاخْتِصَارٍ ، وَفِي إِسْنَادِ أَحْمَدَ انْقِطَاعٌ بَيْنَ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ وَإِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ . وَتَأْتِي أَحَادِيثُ مِنْ هَذَا فِي الطَّهَارَةِ وَفِي الِاحْتِلَامِ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَهُوَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ بِاخْتِصَارٍ ، وَفِي إِسْنَادِ أَحْمَدَ انْقِطَاعٌ بَيْنَ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ وَإِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ . وَتَأْتِي أَحَادِيثُ مِنْ هَذَا فِي الطَّهَارَةِ وَفِي الِاحْتِلَامِ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ .
Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I lived as a neighbour of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Once Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is your view: if a woman sees in a dream that her husband is having intercourse with her, must she take a ritual bath (ghusl)?" Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Umm Sulaym! May your hands be covered in dust! You have put the women to shame before the Messenger of Allah." Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty is not shy of the truth. That we ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about whatever difficulty we face is better than our remaining ignorant of it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umm Sulaym! May your hands be covered in dust! Such a woman must take a ritual bath when she finds water (i.e., discharge)." Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Does a woman also have water?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then for what other reason does her child resemble her? These women are the counterparts of men."

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ : لَقَدْ عِشْتُ بُرْهَةً مِنْ دَهْرٍ وَإِنَّ أَحَدَنَا يُؤْتَى الْإِيمَانَ قَبْلَ الْقُرْآنِ ، وَتَنْزِلُ السُّورَةُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَيَتَعَلَّمُ حَلَالَهَا وَحَرَامَهَا وَمَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَقِفَ عِنْدَهُ مِنْهَا كَمَا تَعَلَّمُونَ أَنْتُمُ الْقُرْآنَ ، ثُمَّ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رِجَالًا يُؤْتَى أَحَدُهُمُ الْقُرْآنَ قَبْلَ الْإِيمَانِ ، فَيَقْرَأُ مَا بَيْنَ فَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ إِلَى خَاتِمَتِهِ مَا يَدْرِي مَا آمِرُهُ وَلَا زَاجِرُهُ ، وَمَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَقِفَ عِنْدَهُ [ مِنْهُ ] ، وَيَنْثُرَهُ نَثْرَ الدَّقَلِ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I lived for a period of time in which one of us would be given faith before the Qur'an. When a surah was revealed to Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), that person would learn its lawful and its unlawful, and also what he ought to pause at in it, just as you (in this age) learn the Qur'an. Then I saw people who were given the Qur'an before faith. They recite the whole of it from Surah al-Fatihah to the end of the Qur'an, yet they do not know what it commands them and what it forbids them, nor what they ought to pause at in it. Such a person rattles through it quickly, the way poor-quality dates are scattered.

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ : بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ وَأَبَا مُوسَى إِلَى الْيَمَنِ ، فَقَالَ : " تَسَانَدَا وَتَطَاوَعَا ، وَبَشِّرَا وَلَا تُنَفِّرَا " ، فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ مُعَاذٌ ، فَحَثَّهُمْ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ وَالتَّفَقُّهِ وَالْقُرْآنِ ، وَقَالَ : أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِأَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ وَأَهْلِ النَّارِ : إِذَا ذُكِرَ الرَّجُلُ بِخَيْرٍ فَهُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ ، وَإِذَا ذُكِرَ بِشَرٍّ فَهُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sending Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Support one another, listen to one another, give good news and do not drive people away. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people, urging them towards Islam, understanding of the religion and the Qur'an, and said: I will tell you about the people of Paradise and the people of Hell: when a man is mentioned with good, he is among the people of Paradise, and when someone is mentioned with evil, he is among the people of Hell.
