Ibrahim bin Maysarah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a man asked Ibn al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him): I have sworn that I will not speak to a man for a hin (a while)? He said: Allah Almighty says: "It brings forth its fruit every hin (season) by the permission of its Lord." [Surah Ibrahim: 25] He said: This is the date palm, whose fruit is borne for one or two months. In our view, hin means two months.

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) sent word to me (saying): I have sworn that I will not do such-and-such for a hin; so what is meant by the hin that cannot be determined? He recited: "Has there come upon man a period (hin) of time" [Surah al-Insan: 1] — no one knows how much time has passed since Allah created him. But as for the word hin that is in this saying of Allah: "It brings forth its fruit every hin" [Surah Ibrahim: 25], it means the interval between the fruit appearing and the fruit being picked.

"And in Thamud, when it was said to them: Enjoy yourselves for a time (hin)" [Surah al-Dhariyat: 43]: that is, for three days. "It brings forth its fruit every hin" [Surah Ibrahim: 25]: he said: Every seventh month. It is narrated from Rabi'ah bin Abi Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: Hin means one year.

Abu Hafs Yazid bin Kaysan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about a man who swore that he would not speak to a man for a time, and I was present at that time. He said: Zaman (a time) means two or three months, when no term has been fixed. They differ about the hin, and the meaning of hin also differs in its various places; so there is no fixed limit for the word hin when it is used unqualified. The word zaman is likewise.
