Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon on the day of sacrifice and said: "The first thing on this day is to pray, and after that to go and sacrifice. Whoever does this has attained our way, and whoever sacrifices before praying, then that is meat for his family, but it is not a sacrifice." The narrator says: My maternal uncle, Sayyiduna Abu Burdah bin Niyar (may Allah be pleased with him), stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I sacrificed before the prayer. But now I have a jadh'ah (a young animal) that is better than a two-toothed animal." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sacrifice it, but it will not suffice for anyone after you."

Amir narrates from Sayyiduna al-Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer and said: "Whoever prays as we pray and faces our qiblah should not slaughter the sacrifice before the prayer (is finished)." Abu Burdah bin Niyar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have slaughtered my animal." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have been hasty." Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have a jadh'ah that is better than a two-toothed animal; shall I slaughter it?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sacrifice it, but it will not suffice for any person after you."
Amir said: So it was the better of the two sacrifices.

Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna al-Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us on the day of sacrifice after the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever prays as we pray and after that slaughters the sacrifice has made the sacrifice, and whoever sacrifices before the prayer, then that is a goat for meat." Abu Burdah bin Niyar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I sacrificed before coming to the prayer, because I knew that this is a day of eating and drinking; I hurried, and I ate myself and also fed my family and neighbours." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is a goat for meat." Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have a young female goat (jadh'ah) that is better than two goats of meat; will it suffice for me?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It will suffice on your behalf, but it will not suffice for anyone after you."

Al-Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one should slaughter the sacrifice before praying." My maternal uncle said: "O Messenger of Allah! On this day there is a great deal of meat; I slaughtered early to feed my family and neighbours. I have a young female goat (jadh'ah) that is better than a goat for meat; shall I slaughter it?" He said: "Slaughter it, but after you a jadh'ah will not suffice for anyone. This is the better of your sacrifices."

Al-Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sacrifices before the prayer has slaughtered only for himself, and whoever slaughters the animal after the prayer, his sacrifice is complete and he has attained the way of the Muslims."

Al-Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him) made his sacrifice before the prayer, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make another sacrifice in its place." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have a jadh'ah that is better than a musinnah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Slaughter it in its place, but it will not suffice for anyone at all after you."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon after the prayer and commanded: "Whoever slaughtered his animal before the prayer should slaughter another in its place." A man from the Ansar stood up and said: "My neighbours were suffering from hunger, so I slaughtered before the prayer. But I have a young goat that I like more than two goats of meat." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him a concession. If it was a concession for him alone, then so it is; otherwise I have no knowledge. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered his two rams, and the people went and slaughtered their goats.

Sayyiduna Jundub bin Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of sacrifice when a man said: "People have made their sacrifices before the prayer." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sacrificed before the prayer should make another sacrifice in its place, and whoever has not yet sacrificed should sacrifice taking the name of Allah."
(b) In the narration of al-Saffar: When he (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of the people's sacrifices, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make other sacrifices in their place, and whoever has not yet sacrificed should sacrifice taking the name of Allah." From these hadiths it is known that a sacrifice made before the prayer will not be counted.

Yazid bin Khumayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) went out with the people on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, and he disapproved of the imam's coming late and said: "By this time we used to have already finished."
(b) Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would go out for Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr after the sun had fully risen, and would lead the Eid prayer at the beginning of its time. Whoever ate before his (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer and fed his family and neighbours, as is clear in the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Burdah bin Niyar (may Allah be pleased with him), that was not permissible; that is why the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him to sacrifice again.
