Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a party of three hundred under the command of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), so that we could keep watch over the caravans of Quraysh. We stayed on the seashore. On another occasion Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We stayed on the seashore for half a month. We were struck by severe hunger, so that we were forced to eat leaves, and so that army was given the very name "Jaysh al-Khabat" (the Army of Leaves). Then the sea cast onto the shore a fish called "al-Anbar". We ate the fish for half a month and rubbed ourselves with oil from its fat, until our bodies became strong. The narrator said: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) took one of its ribs and set it up, and taking a tall man with him, passed (beneath it). On another occasion Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) set up one of the fish's ribs and passed beneath it together with a man and a camel. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man slaughtered three camels once, and three camels each a second and a third time too; then Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade him.

Al-Humaydi narrates from Sufyan that he did not mention the shore; he said: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) took one of its ribs and set it up. Then he chose a tall man and a large camel from the army and ordered him to ride and pass beneath it, and he passed. We told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have anything (of it) with you?" We said: Nothing is left with us now.

We felt severe hunger, and the sea cast a dead fish onto the shore; we had never seen such a large fish. Its name was al-Anbar. We kept eating it for fifteen days. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) set up one of its bones, and a rider passed beneath it.

Some of it was presented to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ate it.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us out, appointing Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) as our commander, so that we could watch over the caravans of Quraysh. We had no provisions except one bag of dates, and Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) would give us only one date each. We asked: What did you do with it? The narrator said: We would suck it as a child sucks, then drink water after it, and that would suffice us for a day. We would beat leaves down with our sticks, soak them in water and eat them. Then we saw on the seashore a fish like a huge sand-dune; its name was al-Anbar. Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is carrion. Then he said: We are the envoys of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the path of Allah, and we have been compelled by necessity, so eat. We, three hundred people, ate the fish for a month until we grew fat. We would scoop out a jar of oil from the socket of that fish's eye, and cut from it a chunk like a bull. Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) took thirteen men and stood them in the eye socket, and he set up one of its ribs and had a large camel with a saddle on it pass beneath it. We took its meat as provisions for the journey. When we came to Madinah we told the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was provision that Allah brought out for you. Do you have any of its meat, so that you may feed us too?" So we sent some of it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ate it.
(b) In the narration of Ahmad bin Yunus: We went along the seashore and saw something like a huge sand-dune; when we came near it, it was the Anbar fish. We would take out a vessel of fat from its eye socket, and we would cut a chunk from it like a bull. The narrator said: They were seated in the socket of that fish's eye. At the end of this hadith it says: We sent its meat to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ate it.

Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered the provisions of the whole army, and they amounted to two bags of dates. Each day we were given a little food, until that too ran out; then we would get one date a day. I asked: What good would one date do? He said: We felt its loss when it ran out. Then, on the order of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), two of its ribs were set up, and a mount was saddled and made to pass beneath them, and it did not reach their height.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a small detachment towards the seashore. Our provisions ran out, until we gathered the provisions from the whole army, and each day only one date would fall to a person's share. A man said to Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu Abdullah, would one date suffice a person? He said: O my nephew, we felt the loss of it when it ran out. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Meanwhile we saw something very large. When we came near it, it was a fish cast out of the sea. The army stayed there for eighteen days, eating as much as they wished, until they became fat and healthy.
