Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) towards the seashore as commander of three hundred men. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was among them too. When we had covered part of the journey, our provisions ran out. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered the provisions of the whole army, and they amounted to two bags of dates. Each day we were given a little food, until that too ran out; then we would get one date a day. I asked: What good would one date do? He said: We felt its loss when it ran out. Then we came to the seashore, where a fish like a hillock was lying, and the whole army ate from it for eighteen days. Then, on the order of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), two of its ribs were set up, and a mount was saddled and made to pass beneath them, and it did not reach their height.
