Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a party of three hundred under the command of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), so that we could keep watch over the caravans of Quraysh. We stayed on the seashore. On another occasion Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We stayed on the seashore for half a month. We were struck by severe hunger, so that we were forced to eat leaves, and so that army was given the very name "Jaysh al-Khabat" (the Army of Leaves). Then the sea cast onto the shore a fish called "al-Anbar". We ate the fish for half a month and rubbed ourselves with oil from its fat, until our bodies became strong. The narrator said: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) took one of its ribs and set it up, and taking a tall man with him, passed (beneath it). On another occasion Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) set up one of the fish's ribs and passed beneath it together with a man and a camel. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man slaughtered three camels once, and three camels each a second and a third time too; then Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade him.
