Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about an arrow that strikes game with its broad side, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the arrow strikes the game with its edge, eat; and when the arrow strikes with its broad side and kills the game, it will be regarded as having died from the blow of a piece of wood, so do not eat that game." The narrator says: What if I send my dog? He said: "When you send your dog after game, say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) and 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), then eat." The narrator says: What if the dog has eaten from it? He said: "Then do not eat, for it has hunted for itself, not for you." The narrator says: What if I find other dogs with my dog? He said: "Then do not eat, for you mentioned the name of Allah over your own dog, not over the other dog."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about game hunted with the broad side of an arrow, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What the edge of the arrow strikes, eat; and what dies from being struck by the broad side of the arrow will be regarded as having died from the blow of a piece of wood." And I asked about game caught by a dog, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you send your dog after game and mention the name of Allah, and the dog holds the game for you, then eat; if the dog has eaten anything from the game, then do not eat the game. If you find another dog along with your dog and you fear that perhaps that dog caught or killed the game, then still do not eat, because you mentioned the name of Allah when sending your own dog, not over the other."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about game caught by a dog, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever game the dog holds for you without eating from it, eat that game, for its catching it will be regarded as its slaughter. If you find another dog with your dog and fear that it may be the one that caught or killed the game, then do not eat, because you mentioned the name of Allah when sending your own dog, not over the other." The narrator says: I asked about an animal hunted by an arrow striking with its broad side, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Game that the arrow strikes with its edge, eat; and what you strike with the broad side of the arrow will be regarded as having died from the blow of a piece of wood."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about hunting, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you send your dog after game, say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) and 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest). If you reach the game before it dies, mention the name of Allah while slaughtering it; and if you find the game killed and the dog has not eaten from it, then eat, for it has caught it for you. If it has eaten something from the game, you should not eat it, because the dog has caught it for itself."

Sayyiduna Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): We are people who hunt with dogs. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you send your trained dog with the name of Allah, if the dog holds the game for you, then eat; if the dog kills the game and eats something from it, then do not eat the game, for it may have hunted for itself; and if other dogs join it, then too do not eat."

Sayyiduna Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): What if the dog eats from the game? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the dog eats from the game, then do not eat, for it is not trained."

Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Analogy could allow that the game be eaten even if the dog has eaten from it, and this is the view of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar and Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with them) and some of our companions. We left it only because of the report that al-Sha'bi mentioned, that Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "If the dog eats from the game, do not eat the game." When this hadith is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is not right to abandon it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When you send your trained dog with the name of Allah, you may eat the game whether the dog has eaten from it or not.
As for the report on this from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), Malik mentioned it from him in al-Muwatta' as munqati' (with a broken chain).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصيد والذبائح / 18879
Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Even if the dog eats half of the game, you may eat it.
This too is mursal (with a break in the chain).

Humayd bin Malik asked Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him): Our hunting dogs eat some of the game while hunting and leave some. He said: Even if they leave only half, eat it.
This one is mawsul (with a connected chain).

Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When you send your trained dog after game, and it eats two-thirds of the game and only one-third remains, you may eat what remains. (b) Qatadah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he disliked this and used to say: If the dog were trained, it would not have eaten. And the permissibility of eating it has been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), if the hadith is authentic.

Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about game caught by a dog: "When you send your hunting dog with the name of Allah, eat the game, even if the dog has eaten from it; and eat whatever your hand returns to you."

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him), a Bedouin, said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I have trained dogs; give me a ruling about their game. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When your dog is trained and holds the game, eat, whether you slaughter it or not." The narrator says: What if the dog eats from it? He said: "Even if the dog eats from the game."
(b) Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from a man of Hudhayl that he asked about game caught by a dog, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat, whether the dog has eaten from the game or not."
The hadith of al-Sha'bi from Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) is more authentic than the hadith of Dawud bin Amr al-Dimashqi and the hadith of Amr bin Shu'ayb, and Allah knows best; and because of this (narration of Shu'bah) the hadith of Amr became ma'lul (defective).
