Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we send our trained hunting dog after game and it holds the game for us; should I mention the name of Allah over it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you send your trained dog and you have said 'Bismillah wallahu akbar' (In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest), then eat." I asked: What if the dog kills the game? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When no other dog has joined it, then even if it kills it, eat." Then I said: I hunt by striking with a blunt arrow (mi'rad). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you hunt with the blunt arrow and it pierces the game, eat it; if it strikes it with its broad side, then do not eat."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about game caught by a dog, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat what it holds for you, for its catching it is its slaughter. If you find another dog or dogs with your hunting dog, then do not eat; you said 'Bismillah wallahu akbar' (In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest) when sending your hunting dog, while it was not said when the other dogs were sent."

Nafi' bin al-Azraq asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): What is your view: when I send my trained dog after game and it then kills the game, may I eat that game? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Eat it. Nafi' said: Allah says: "Except what you have slaughtered" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 3], that is, eat only when you have slaughtered it; yet you say that even if the game is killed, eat it. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Ibn al-Azraq, what is your view: if I catch it and slaughter it, there is no harm. By Allah, I know concerning which dogs this verse was revealed. It was revealed concerning the dogs of Banu Nabhan, who are of the tribe of Tayyi'. O Ibn al-Azraq, woe to you! There will surely be news for you.
