Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were 130 companions with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Does anyone have any food?" A man had a sa' of wheat, and it was kneaded. Then a polytheist man, tall with dishevelled hair, came with some goats. He said: "Will you sell them, or is it a gift?" He said: It is for sale. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) bought a goat from him, and it was slaughtered. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the meat of the belly be roasted. By Allah! We were one hundred and thirty people, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) cut pieces of that meat for us; if anyone was not present, he would set it aside for him. The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) put that meat into two bowls, and all of us ate our fill. Then whatever was left over we loaded onto a camel, or as he said.

Abdullah al-Hawzani said: I met Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), the mu'adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and asked: O Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), tell me about the expenses of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He mentioned the hadith, in which it was that a man came running and said: O Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is calling you. I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and there were four she-camels laden with goods. I asked permission, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rejoice, Allah has arranged the payment of your debt." Then he said: "Do you not see these four laden she-camels?" I said: Of course. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are all for you, and on them are clothing and food which the chief of Fadak has given me as a gift. Take them and pay off your debt." He said: I did so.

Sayyiduna Iyad bin Himar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I gave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a she-camel as a gift, or some other gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you become Muslim?" I said: No. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been forbidden (to accept) the gifts of the polytheists." (b) Sayyiduna Iyad bin Himar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I gave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) some gift or a she-camel. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you Muslim?" I said: No. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) refused to accept the gift and said: "We do not accept the gifts of the polytheists." I asked al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him): What are the gifts of the polytheists? He said: Their presents.
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: His (peace and blessings be upon him) rejection of his gift may indicate prohibition, or it may indicate mere dislike (tanzih); and it may be that by rejecting his gift he wished to vex him so that this would lead him to Islam. The reports on accepting the gifts of the polytheists are more authentic and more numerous.
