Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out the prescribed punishment (hadd) in Madinah, although shirk (that is, the polytheists) was close to it, and in Madinah itself there were many polytheists with whom there was a peace treaty; and he (peace and blessings be upon him) had the drinker (of wine) beaten (as the hadd) at Hunayn, while shirk (the polytheists) was close to him."

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Azhar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hunayn asking about the camp of Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), when a drunk man was brought. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: "Strike (him) with whatever is in their hands," and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) threw dust on him.

Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far narrates from his father, from his grandfather, concerning the story of Khaybar, that skins of wine were brought out of the fortress of al-Sa'b bin Mu'adh and poured away. A Muslim man deliberately drank some of that wine. When the matter reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him with his shoe and ordered the people to strike him with their shoes. He was called Abdullah al-Himar. He was a man who could not keep away from drinking. He (peace and blessings be upon him) punished him several times. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, curse him! How many times he has been punished!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar! Do not say so; he loves Allah and His Messenger."

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, while Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him, that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed facing one of the camels of the spoils to be distributed. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he took between his fingers a tuft of hair from the camel's hump and said: "Beware! This is from your spoils of war; my share of it is only the one-fifth, and the one-fifth too is returned to you. So hand over the thread and the needle, and anything smaller or bigger than that, for breach of trust in the spoils of war is a disgrace for those who commit it in this world and the Hereafter. Strive for the sake of Allah against people, near and far, and let not the blame of any blamer keep you from (the cause of) Allah. Establish the prescribed punishments in travel and at home, and hold fast to jihad, for it is a great gate among the gates of Paradise, through which Allah, the Lord of Might, delivers from every worry and grief."

Sayyiduna al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he was sitting with Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Mu'awiyah al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him), and they were discussing hadith. Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer facing a camel, and then he mentioned (the hadith) similarly. In this hadith it says: "Establish the prescribed punishments in travel and at home."

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Establish the prescribed punishments in travel and at home, upon the near and the far, and do not care, in the matter of Allah, about the blame of any blamer."

Harun bin al-Asamm (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) with an army, and Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Dirar bin al-Azwar (may Allah be pleased with him) with a party of horsemen. They raided (a clan of) Banu Asad and captured a beautiful bride. Dirar (may Allah be pleased with him) liked her, and with the consent of his companions Dirar (may Allah be pleased with him) had intercourse with her. When they returned, he was ashamed and filled with regret. When he was brought to Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him of what he had done, Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I declare this woman permissible for you. He said: No, rather write to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote that his head should be crushed with stones. When Sayyiduna Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) letter arrived, he had already died. The narrator said: Allah Almighty saved Dirar bin al-Azwar (may Allah be pleased with him) from disgrace.
