Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Single combat (mubarazah) against the enemy took place in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and on the day of Badr a man of the Ansar, without armour, charged at a group of the polytheists after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had informed him of the good (and reward) in that (deed), and he was martyred."
The Shaykh (Imam al-Bayhaqi) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "He was Sayyiduna Awf bin Afra' (may Allah be pleased with him), as Ibn Ishaq mentioned from Asim bin Umar bin Qatadah; and this (incident) will come in its proper place, if Allah wills, along with the mention of those who engaged in single combat before him (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) describes the incident of Badr: When the polytheists drew near, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Advance towards Paradise, (a Paradise whose width is equal to the distance between the heavens and the earth) [Surah Al Imran: 133]." Sayyiduna Umayr bin al-Humam al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), is its width equal to the expanse between the heavens and the earth? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" Umayr said: "Bakhin bakhin" (Excellent, excellent). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why did you say 'Bakhin bakhin' (Excellent, excellent)?" Umayr said: Only out of the hope that I may be among its people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are among them." He took some dates out of his pouch and began eating them. Then he said: If I wait until I finish eating these dates, that would be a long life. At once he threw the dates away and fought the enemy until he was martyred.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that on the day of Uhud a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): If I am killed today, where will I be? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In Paradise." He threw away the dates he had with him, fought the enemy and was martyred.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Al-Nadr bin Anas, the paternal uncle of Anas bin Malik, was absent from the battle of Badr. When he came, he said: I was absent from the first battle that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fought against the polytheists. If Allah lets me witness a battle, Allah will surely see what I do.
When the day of Uhud came and the Muslims were routed, he said: O Allah, I declare myself free before You of what these people (that is, the polytheists) have brought, and I apologise to You for what these people (that is, the Muslims) have done. Then he went forth with his sword and met Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), and said to him: "O Sa'd! By the One in whose hand is my soul! I can smell the fragrance of Paradise beyond Uhud. How lovely is the fragrance of Paradise!" Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I did not have the strength to do what he did. We found him among the slain. He had more than eighty wounds, among them wounds from sword, spear and arrow. He had been mutilated, and his sister recognised him only by his fingertips. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We used to say that the verse, "Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah" [Surah al-Ahzab: 23], was revealed about him and his companions. The Imam says: It is like this in my book, but the correct name is Anas bin al-Nadr instead of al-Nadr bin Anas.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the field of Uhud only seven of the Ansar and two of Quraysh were left alone with him (peace and blessings be upon him). When the disbelievers surrounded him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will hold them back? For him is Paradise, or he will be my companion in Paradise." One of the Ansar came forward, fought the enemy and was martyred. They tightened the encirclement again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever holds them back, for him is Paradise, or he will be my companion in Paradise." A second Ansari stepped forward, fought and was martyred. In this way all seven of the Ansar were martyred, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We have not done justice to our companions."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the day of the battle of Yamamah, I passed by Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was applying hanut (the perfume used for the dead). I said: Uncle, do you not see what the Muslims are facing, and you are here? He smiled and said: Right now, my nephew. He put on his weapons, mounted his horse and reached the ranks, and said: Woe to these people and to what they are doing. And he said to the enemy: Woe to these people and to what they worship. (Then he said:) Clear the way for it, or he said: clear its path (meaning his horse), so that I may enter the heat of it (the battle). Then he charged, fought and was martyred.

It is narrated from Thabit al-Bunani that one day in a battle Sayyiduna Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl (may Allah be pleased with him) began to go forward on foot. Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not do this; your being killed would be grievous for the Muslims." He said: "Let me go, O Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him)! You are ahead of me in having stood by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whereas my father and I were the greatest enemies of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He went forward and was martyred.

Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Muslims reached a garden whose gate was closed, and in that garden were polytheists. So al-Bara' bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) sat on a shield and said: Lift me up with your spears and throw me over to them. So they lifted him with their spears and threw him to the other side of the garden. By the time they reached him, he had already killed ten of their men.

Abu Bakr bin Abi Musa (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the enemy was present, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Paradise is under the shade of swords." A man stood up who was in a dishevelled state, and said: O Abu Musa! Did you yourself hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying this? He said: Yes. He went back to his companions, greeted them with salam, broke the scabbard of his sword, launched a fierce attack on the enemy and was martyred. [Sahih: Muslim]
