أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فِي قَوْلِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: " {وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ} [البقرة: ١٩٥] فِي النَّفَقَةِ ". أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ شُمَيْلٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ فِي هَذَا، قَالَ: " هُوَ تَرْكُ النَّفَقَةِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ ".
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The verse, "And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction" [Surah al-Baqarah: 195], was revealed concerning spending (in the way of Allah).
Al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This verse is about not spending in the path of Allah.
Al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This verse is about not spending in the path of Allah.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الصَّائِغُ، ثنا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، ثنا شَيْبَانُ، عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ الْمُعْتَمِرِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ مَوْلَى أُمِّ هَانِئٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، فِي قَوْلِهِ: " {وَأَنْفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ} [البقرة: ١٩٥] الْآيَةَ، قَالَ: يَقُولُ: لَا يَقُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ ⦗٧٨⦘ لَا أَجِدُ شَيْئًا، إِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ إِلَّا مِشْقَصًا فَلْيُجَهَّزْ بِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ: {وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ} [البقرة: ١٩٥] ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says concerning the words of Allah, "And spend in the path of Allah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 195]: Let no one ever say that he has nothing to give in the path of Allah; if he has only a spear, let him prepare (for jihad) with it. "And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction" [Surah al-Baqarah: 195].
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُقْرِي، عَنْ حَيْوَةَ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ، أنبأ يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَسْلَمُ أَبُو عِمْرَانَ، قَالَ: كُنَّا بِالْقُسْطَنْطِينِيَّةِ وَعَلَى أَهْلِ مِصْرَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، وَعَلَى أَهْلِ الشَّامِ رَجُلٌ يُرِيدُ فَضَالَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ، فَخَرَجَ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ صَفٌّ عَظِيمٌ مِنَ الرُّومِ فَصَفَفْنَا لَهُمْ، فَحَمَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى الرُّومِ حَتَّى دَخَلَ فِيهِمْ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فَصَاحَ النَّاسُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالُوا: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ أَلْقَى بِيَدِهِ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ، فَقَامَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إِنَّكُمْ لَتُؤَوِّلُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ عَلَى هَذَا التَّأْوِيلِ، إِنَّمَا أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فِينَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ، إِنَّا لَمَّا أَعَزَّ اللهُ دِينَهُ وَكَثُرَ نَاصِرُوهُ، فَقُلْنَا فِيمَا بَيْنَنَا بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ سِرًّا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ أَمْوَالَنَا قَدْ ضَاعَتْ فَلَوْ أَقَمْنَا فِيهَا قَدْ أَصْلَحْنَا مَا ضَاعَ مِنْهَا، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا مَا هَمَمْنَا بِهِ، فَقَالَ: {وَأَنْفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ} [البقرة: ١٩٥]، فَكَانَتِ التَّهْلُكَةُ فِي الْإِقَامَةِ الَّتِي أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نُقِيمَ فِي أَمْوَالِنَا نُصْلِحُهَا، فَأَمَرَنَا بِالْغَزْوِ. فَمَا زَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ غَازِيًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
Aslam Abu Imran (may Allah have mercy on him) says: We were at Constantinople; at that time the commander was Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), and in Syria another man was commander, whose name was Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him). A large army came out from the Romans, and we lined up in ranks against them. A Muslim charged at the Romans and went right in among them, then came back out, and the people were shouting at him: "He has thrown himself into destruction." Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O people! You interpret this verse in this way, whereas this verse was revealed about us, the Ansar. When the religion became honoured and its helpers became many, some of us said to one another, keeping it hidden from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Our properties have been ruined; if only we stayed there so that they could be set right. So Allah Almighty refuted our thinking with these words: "And spend in the path of Allah, and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction" [Surah al-Baqarah: 195]. The destruction lay in what we intended, namely staying there to set right our properties; and we were commanded to wage jihad. Thereafter Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) remained engaged in jihad until his death.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِلْبَرَاءِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَحْمِلُ عَلَى الْكَتِيبَةِ بِالسَّيْفِ فِي أَلْفٍ، مِنَ التَّهْلُكَةِ ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ: " لَا، إِنَّمَا التَّهْلُكَةُ أَنْ يُذْنِبَ الرَّجُلُ الذَّنْبَ ثُمَّ يُلْقِيَ بِيَدَيْهِ، ثُمَّ يَقُولَ: لَا يُغْفَرُ لِي ".
A man said to Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): I charged at an army of a thousand; is that destruction? Al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No. Destruction is that a person commits a sin, then sinks deep into it and says: I will not be forgiven.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ هُوَ الْأَصَمُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْعَسْقَلَانِيُّ، ثنا آدَمُ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: {وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ} [البقرة: ١٩٥] قَالَ: يَقُولُ: " إِذَا أَذْنَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يُلْقِيَّنَّ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ، وَلَا يَقُولَنَّ لَا تَوْبَةَ لِي، وَلَكِنْ لِيَسْتَغْفِرِ اللهَ وَلْيَتُبْ إِلَيْهِ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ ".
Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) says concerning the verse, "And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction" [Surah al-Baqarah: 195]: When a person commits a sin, let him not throw himself into destruction, and let him never say that there is no forgiveness for him; rather, he should seek forgiveness and turn to Allah. Allah Almighty is Forgiving, Merciful.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ عَمْرُو بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْبَصْرِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ، أنبأ يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ قَيْسٍ هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ مُدْرِكِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ الْأَحْمَسِيِّ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فَذَكَرُوا ⦗٧٩⦘ رَجُلًا شَرَى نَفْسَهُ يَوْمَ نَهَاوَنْدَ، فَقَالَ: ذَاكَ وَاللهِ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ خَالِي، زَعَمَ النَّاسُ أَنَّهُ أَلْقَى بِيَدَيْهِ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: " كَذَبَ أُولَئِكَ، بَلْ هُوَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ اشْتَرَوَا الْآخِرَةَ بِالدُّنْيَا ". كَذَا فِي رِوَايَةِ يَعْلَى.
Sayyiduna Mudrik bin Awf al-Ahmasi (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The people mentioned a man who had sold his life on the day of the battle of Nahawand. Mudrik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Commander of the Believers! He was my maternal uncle. People think that he threw himself into destruction. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The people are wrong; rather, he has purchased the Hereafter in exchange for his own self.
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، ثنا ابْنُ عُثْمَانَ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ، أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، قَالَ: لَمَّا أُخْبِرَ عُمَرُ بِقَتْلِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ مُقَرِّنٍ وَقِيلَ أُصِيبَ فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ وَآخَرُونَ لَا نَعْرِفُهُمْ، قَالَ: " وَلَكِنَّ اللهَ يَعْرِفُهُمْ ". قَالَ: وَرَجُلٌ شَرَى نَفْسَهُ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَحْمَسَ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَالِكُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ: ذَاكَ خَالِي يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، زَعَمَ نَاسٌ أَنَّهُ أَلْقَى بِيَدِهِ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ. فَقَالُ عُمَرُ: " كَذَبَ أُولَئِكَ، بَلْ هُوَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ اشْتَرُوا الْآخِرَةَ بِالدُّنْيَا ". قَالَ قَيْسٌ: وَالْمَقْتُولُ عَوْفُ بْنُ أَبِي حُمَيْدٍ وَهُوَ أَبُو شِبْلٍ. قَالَ يَعْقُوبُ: مَالِكٌ أَشْبَهُ.
Sayyiduna Husayn bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was informed of the killing of Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Muqarrin (may Allah be pleased with him), and it was said that some other people whom we do not know had also been harmed, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah knows them. Then Husayn bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man sold his life. A man from Ahmas, who was called Malik bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), said: He is my maternal uncle, O Commander of the Believers! People think that he threw himself into destruction. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The people are wrong; rather, these are the ones who purchased the Hereafter in exchange for the world. Qays says: The one killed was Awf bin Abi Humayd (may Allah be pleased with him), and he is Abu Shibl. And Ya'qub says: Malik is more likely.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَنَزِيُّ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَا: ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، أنبأ عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ مُرَّةَ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " عَجِبَ رَبُّنَا عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِنْ رَجُلٍ غَزَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَانْهَزَمَ أَصْحَابُهُ فَعَلِمَ مَا عَلَيْهِ فَرَجَعَ حَتَّى أُهْرِيقَ دَمُهُ، فَيَقُولُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِمَلَائِكَتِهِ: انْظُرُوا إِلَى عَبْدِي رَجَعَ رَغْبَةً فِيمَا عِنْدِي وَشَفَقَةً مِمَّا عِنْدِي حَتَّى أُهْرِيقَ دَمُهُ ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty expressed wonder at a servant who went out for jihad; his companions were defeated, and he realised what (duty) was upon him, so he went back until his blood was shed. Allah Almighty says to His angels: Look at My servant; he went back out of hope for what is with Me and out of fear of what (punishment) is with Me, until he was killed."
