Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Al-Nadr bin Anas, the paternal uncle of Anas bin Malik, was absent from the battle of Badr. When he came, he said: I was absent from the first battle that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fought against the polytheists. If Allah lets me witness a battle, Allah will surely see what I do.
When the day of Uhud came and the Muslims were routed, he said: O Allah, I declare myself free before You of what these people (that is, the polytheists) have brought, and I apologise to You for what these people (that is, the Muslims) have done. Then he went forth with his sword and met Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), and said to him: "O Sa'd! By the One in whose hand is my soul! I can smell the fragrance of Paradise beyond Uhud. How lovely is the fragrance of Paradise!" Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I did not have the strength to do what he did. We found him among the slain. He had more than eighty wounds, among them wounds from sword, spear and arrow. He had been mutilated, and his sister recognised him only by his fingertips. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We used to say that the verse, "Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah" [Surah al-Ahzab: 23], was revealed about him and his companions. The Imam says: It is like this in my book, but the correct name is Anas bin al-Nadr instead of al-Nadr bin Anas.
