Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me in my illness, and I disliked dying in the very land from which I had emigrated. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Shall I bequeath all my wealth? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." I said: Half of the wealth? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." I said: A third of the wealth? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A third (you may bequeath), and even a third is a lot." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you leave your heirs in a state of wealth is better than that you leave them in poverty, stretching out their hands before people. And whenever you spend anything in the way of Allah, it will become charity on your behalf, even the morsel that you raise to your wife's mouth (you are rewarded for it too). And perhaps (Allah) will grant you elevation and benefit many people through you and harm others (i.e., the disbelievers and polytheists)."

The aforementioned hadith was narrated with the same chain and the same meaning, except with these additional words: I was ill in Makkah and he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me, and he (Sa'd) disliked that his death should occur in the same land from which he had emigrated. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Afra'! May Allah have mercy on you." Then he narrated the whole hadith.

Amir bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah have mercy on him) says that his father (Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that in the year of the conquest of Makkah he fell ill in Makkah and in that illness he feared he would die, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit him. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will I be left behind from my emigration? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will certainly not be left behind after me; so keep doing good deeds, and whatever you do for the pleasure of Allah, Allah Almighty will keep raising your station and rank through it. And it may also be that you are left behind, and that through you Allah benefits some people and harms others." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'Allahumma amdi li-ashabi hijratahum wa la taruddahum ala a'qabihim' (O Allah, complete the emigration of my Companions and do not turn them back on their heels). But the poor Sa'd bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him) - he would lament for him that he died in Makkah itself.

The above-mentioned narration is reported with the same chain and the same meaning, except for these words: the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would lament for him that he died in Makkah. And Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sa'd bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man from the tribe of Banu Amir bin Lu'ayy.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب السير / 17783
Three sons of Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), all of them, narrate from their father that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him in Makkah to visit him, and he began to weep. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What makes you weep?" He said: I fear that my death will occur in the land from which I emigrated, just as Sa'd bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him) died in this same city. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allahumma ishfi Sa'dan, Allahumma ishfi Sa'dan' (O Allah, cure Sa'd; O Allah, cure Sa'd). He (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated three times.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب السير / 17784
Sayyiduna Amr al-Qari (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was setting out for Hunayn, he (peace and blessings be upon him) left Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) behind; and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) came from al-Ji'ranah to perform Umrah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), who was exhausted by pain and in a state of unconsciousness. (After recovering) Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a wealthy man and I have no heir either (i.e., kalalah). Shall I bequeath all my wealth or give it in charity? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He said: Shall I give two-thirds of the wealth in charity? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Then Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I bequeath half of the wealth? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He said again: Shall I give one-third of the wealth in charity? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! And even that is a lot." Then Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I am stricken with illness in the very place from which I emigrated. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I hope that Allah Almighty will raise your ranks, and through you will harm some people and benefit others." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Amr bin al-Qari! If Sa'd dies after me, bury him here." He (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand towards the road to Madinah. This narration too agrees with the narration of Sufyan, in which it is stated that this incident took place in the year of the conquest, whereas the other narrators, through al-Zuhri, say that this incident took place in the year of the Farewell Hajj. And likewise in this narration there is a disagreement on the part of Ibn Khuthaym concerning the names of the grandsons of Amr bin al-Qari.
