Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The thief is not to be made to pay compensation when the hadd has been carried out on him." In a narration from Abu Abdullah: "The thief is not to be made to pay compensation."
There is disagreement about this hadith from al-Mufaddal: it was narrated from him in this way; it was narrated from him from Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'd; and it was narrated from him from Yunus, from Sa'd bin Ibrahim, from his brother al-Miswar. If this Sa'd is the son of Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, then from the historical records we know of no brother of his, known for narrating, who was called al-Miswar; and for al-Miswar, to whom Sa'd bin Muhammad bin al-Miswar bin Ibrahim is traced, no hearing from his grandfather Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) is established, nor any seeing of him, so it is munqati' (broken). Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman has no established hearing from Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him); it is only said that he saw him. His father died in the time of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and his children came only after the death of his father Abd al-Rahman, so no narration from him or seeing of him is established for them; thus it is munqati'. And if it is someone else, then we do not know him, nor do we know his brother. And nothing of his brother's wealth is lawful for anyone except what he gives willingly.

It is narrated from Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) that the thief is liable for the stolen property, whether it is still with him or not, and his hand will also be cut off.
