It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man from the tribe of Muzaynah came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is your view concerning sheep stolen from the mountain pasture?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "[The thief owes] it and the like of it, and an exemplary punishment. There is no amputation for any livestock except what has been sheltered in the fold and reaches the price of a shield; for that the hand is cut off. For what does not reach the price of a shield, there is a fine of twice its value and lashes as an exemplary punishment." He said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is your view concerning fruit hanging on the trees?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "[He owes] it and the like of it along with it, and an exemplary punishment. There is no amputation for any hanging fruit except what has been sheltered in the drying floor. Whatever is taken from the drying floor and reaches the price of a shield, for that there is amputation; for what does not reach the price of a shield, there is a fine of twice its value and lashes as an exemplary punishment."

It is narrated from Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib that some slaves of Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) at al-Aliyah took a she-camel belonging to a man of the tribe of Muzaynah; they slaughtered it and confessed to it. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for Hatib and mentioned this to him, saying: These slaves of yours have stolen and slaughtered the she-camel of a man of Muzaynah and have confessed to it. He ordered Kathir bin al-Salt to cut off their hands; then, after he had gone, he sent for him and called him back, and said to Hatib: Were it not that I think you keep them hungry, to the point that one of them would do what Allah has forbidden, I would have cut off their hands. But by Allah, since I am letting them go, I will surely impose on you a fine on their account that will hurt you. Then he asked the man of Muzaynah: What was its price? He said: I used to refuse four hundred for it. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then give him eight hundred.
