Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A thief was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill him." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, he has only stolen." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amputate [his limb]." So it was amputated. Then he was brought a second time, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill him." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, he has only stolen." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amputate [his limb]." So it was amputated. Then he was brought a third time, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill him." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, he has only stolen." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amputate [his limb]." Then he was brought a fourth time, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill him." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, he has only stolen." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amputate [his limb]." Then he was brought a fifth time, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill him."
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So we took him away and killed him, then we dragged him and threw him into a well, and we threw stones on him.
In the narration of Abu Ma'shar: the first time they said: He has stolen, O Messenger of Allah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Cut off his hand." The second time, after this exchange, he said: "Cut off his foot"; the third time: "Cut off his hand"; and the fourth time: "Cut off his foot." The fifth time he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did I not tell you: Kill him, kill him?" He said: So we took him to the camels' enclosure and drove the camels at him, but he raised his hands and feet until the camels shied away from him. Then we pelted him with stones until we killed him.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A thief was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he ordered that his hand be cut off. Then he was brought, having stolen, and he ordered that his right foot be cut off. Then he was brought, having stolen, and he ordered that he be killed.

Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hatib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man stole in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The man was brought to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill him." They said: He has only stolen. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then cut off his hand." Then he stole again and was cut. Then he stole in the time of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and was cut; then he stole again and was cut, until all his limbs had been cut off. Then he stole a fifth time, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) knew better about this man when he ordered that he be killed. Take him away and kill him." So he was handed over to some young men of Quraysh, among them Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Make me your leader. So they made him their leader, and whenever he struck him, they struck him, until they killed him.

Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Abi Rabi'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A thief was brought, and they said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is a slave belonging to some orphans of the Ansar; by Allah, we do not know of any wealth they have other than him." So he let him go. Then he was brought a second time, and he let him go. Then he was brought a third time, and he let him go. Then he was brought a fourth time, and he let him go. Then he was brought a fifth time, and he cut off his hand; then he was brought a sixth time, and he cut off his foot; then he was brought a seventh time, and he cut off his hand; then he was brought an eighth time, and he cut off his foot.
The version naming al-Harith bin Abdullah bin Abi Rabi'ah is more correct; it is a good (hasan) mursal report with an authentic chain.
A slave was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (and the same meaning is mentioned). It seems that in the first four times he did not consider his theft to have reached the amount that makes amputation obligatory, and then considered that it did in the later times, so he ordered the amputation. This mursal report strengthens the connected report before it.

Hazrat Abd al-Rahman bin al-Qasim (may Allah have mercy on him) reports from his father (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man from Yemen, whose hand had been cut off and whose foot had also been cut off, came to Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and complained that the governor of Yemen had wronged him. He used to pray at night, and Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would say: "By your father, your night is not the night of a thief." Then a necklace of Hazrat Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), went missing, and that man was going around with them saying: "O Allah, seize the one who stole by night from this righteous household." The necklace was found with a goldsmith, and it emerged that the amputee had brought it. He confessed, or witnesses testified against him, and Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the order and his left hand was cut off. Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, his supplications against himself are more grievous in my view than his theft."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to cut off a man's foot after his hand and foot had already been cut off, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Sunnah is the hand." The saying of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), "The Sunnah is the hand," suggests that he knew a Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning it.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب السرقة / 17264
Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on her) says that a man stole in the time of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); his hand had been cut off and his foot had also been cut off before. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) intended that his foot be cut off and his hand be left, so that he could use it to clean and purify himself and make use of it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, by the One in whose Hand is my soul, you shall surely cut off his other hand. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the order, and his other hand was cut off as well.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I was present with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) when he cut off a hand after a hand and a foot had already been cut off.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب السرقة / 17266
Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin A'idh (may Allah have mercy on him) says: A man was brought to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) whose hand and foot had been cut off. He had stolen. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that his foot be cut off, but Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said: "The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 33]. This man's hand and foot have already been cut off; it is not fitting that his foot be cut off so that he is left unable to stand or walk. Either give him a discretionary punishment (ta'zir) or confine him in prison. The narrator said: So he confined him in prison.
The first narration from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is more likely to be authentic. How could this one be authentic from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when, in the first narration, he rejected cutting off the foot after the hand and foot and pointed to the hand? And the connected narration of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) testifies to the authenticity of the first narration.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب السرقة / 17268
A thief was brought to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and his hand was cut off. Then he was brought again, and his foot was cut off. Then he was brought again, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I cut off his hand, so that he cannot touch anything? Then he said: Or shall I cut off his foot, on which he walks? Indeed, I feel shy before Allah Almighty. Then he beat him and put him in prison.
In another narration, Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Killing a person on whom the hadd has been carried out is abrogated.
