Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) reports the reading of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "As for the male thief and the female thief, their right hands are to be cut off" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 38]. Sufyan bin Uyaynah (may Allah have mercy on him) likewise narrated it from Ibn Abi Najih, and this report is munqati' (has a broken chain). Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said the same, except that he said: In our reading it is: "The male thieves and the female thieves, their right hands are to be cut off" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 38].
