Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not turn back into misguidance after me, some of you striking the necks of others."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Muslims take up swords and one of them kills the other, then both the killer and the slain are people of Hell."

Al-Ahnaf bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I set out intending to help a man, and Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) met me and asked: Where are you heading? I said: To help this man. He said: Go back, for I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When two Muslims fight each other with their swords, both the killer and the slain are in Hell." I said: O Messenger of Allah, the killer (deserves it), but what is the fault of the slain? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He too was eager to kill his companion."

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: People used to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about good, and I used to ask him about evil for fear that it would overtake me. I said: O Messenger of Allah, we were in ignorance (jahiliyyah) and evil, then Allah brought us this good; will there be evil after this good? He said: "Yes." I said: Will there be good after that evil? He said: "Yes, and in it there will be some haze (dakhan)." I said: What is its haze? He said: "People who follow a way other than my Sunnah and guide by other than my guidance; you will approve of some of what they do and disapprove of some." I said: Will there be evil after that good? He said: "Yes, callers at the gates of Hell; whoever answers them, they will throw him into it." I said: O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us. He said: "Yes, they are of our own skin and speak our tongues." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you command me if that overtakes me? He said: "Hold fast to the community (jama'ah) of the Muslims and their imam." I said: And if they have neither a community nor an imam? He said: "Then keep away from all those sects, even if you have to bite on the root of a tree, until death comes to you while you are in that state."

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be trials in which the one sleeping will be better than the one awake, the one walking better than the one hastening, the one sitting better than the one standing, and the one standing better than the one walking. Whoever finds a place of refuge from them, let him take refuge in it."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be trials in which the one walking will be better than the one hastening, the one sitting better than the one standing, and the one lying down better than the one sitting. So whoever has goats, land or camels, let him go and stay with them." A man asked: O Messenger of Allah, may Allah make me your ransom, what should one who has none of these things do? He said: "Let him take his sword, go to a rock and beat its edge with a stone (to blunt it), and save himself from them as best he can. O Allah, I have conveyed! O Allah, I have conveyed!" Then a man asked, as the first man had: If someone takes me forcibly into one of the groups and then someone kills me with his sword, what will be my fate? He said: "He will bear your sin and his own, and he will be among the people of Hell."

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Dharr! What will you do when such hardship befalls that people will not be able to come from their homes to the prayer?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Exercise restraint." Then he said: "O Abu Dharr! What will you do when deaths become many and a house will be (worth) a slave?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be patient." Then he said: "O Abu Dharr! What will you do when killing becomes so widespread that even the stones are drowned in blood?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay where you are." I said: Shall I not even take up my weapons? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not join any party; and when you fear being killed, throw your cloth over your face; your sin and his will be upon him."

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Near the Hour there will be trials like pieces of a very dark night. A man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, and a believer in the evening and a disbeliever in the morning. In them the one sitting will be better than the one standing, and the one walking better than the one hastening. Break your bows, cut your bowstrings, and strike your swords against stones. If anyone breaks in upon one of you, let him be like the better of the two sons of Adam."

Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): When the Muslims fall into dispute, what should I do? He said: "Take your sword to the mountain, break it there, and stay in your house until a natural death comes to you or someone kills you."

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "On the Day of Resurrection a man will come holding another by the hand and will say: O my Lord, this man killed me. Allah Almighty will ask: Why did you kill him? He will say: So that so-and-so might have dominance. Allah Almighty will say: It was not for so-and-so; now bear his sin as well."

Abu Imran al-Jawni said: I said to Sayyiduna Jundab (may Allah be pleased with him): Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) took my pledge that I would fight whoever fights him, and now he is calling me to fight the people of Syria. He said: Pay a ransom (to be excused). I said: They have refused, saying that nothing will do except that I fight alongside them. He said: A man told me, and by Allah he did not lie to me, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection a servant will come holding another man by the hand and will say: O Allah, this man killed me. Allah Almighty will ask: Why? He will say: So that the kingship of so-and-so might be established."

Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us to al-Huraqat, and those people became frightened and alarmed. We caught a man and he said "La ilaha illallah" (There is no god but Allah), but we killed him. Then something troubled me within myself, so I mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "O Usamah! Who will save you from 'La ilaha illallah' on the Day of Resurrection?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, he only said it out of fear of the weapons. He said: "Did you split open his heart (to see)? Who will save you from this very 'La ilaha illallah'?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept on saying this until I wished that I had become a Muslim only that day.
Abu Zabyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I will not kill (anyone who says La ilaha illallah) until Dhu al-Butayn, meaning Usamah, kills him. A man said: Has Allah not said: "And fight them until there is no fitnah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 193]? Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We fought until the fitnah ended, and no fitnah remained; but you and your companions want there to be fitnah.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that two men came to him concerning the fitnah of Ibn al-Zubayr and said: You know what the people have done? You are the son of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); what prevents you from coming out? He said: What prevents me is that Allah Almighty has made the blood of a Muslim brother sacred. They said: Has Allah Almighty not said: "And fight them until there is no fitnah and the religion, all of it, is for Allah" [Surah al-Anfal: 39]? He said: We fought until that was so; but now you fight so that there will be fitnah and the religion will be for other than Allah.

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that a man came to him and said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, do you not hear what Allah has mentioned in His Book: "And if two groups of the believers fight one another" [Surah al-Hujurat: 9]? So what prevents you from fighting as Allah has mentioned in His Book? He said: O my nephew, to be reproached with this verse while not fighting is dearer to me than to be reproached with the verse that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said before it: "And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell" [Surah al-Nisa: 93]. The man said: But Allah has said: "And fight them until there is no fitnah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 193]. Ibn Umar said: We did that in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when Islam was small and a man would be persecuted for his religion: they would either kill him or bind him, until Islam prevailed and there was no fitnah. When the man saw that he would not agree with him in what he wanted, he said: Then what do you say about Ali and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both)? Ibn Umar said: As for Uthman, Allah has pardoned him, but you disliked to pardon him. As for Ali, he is the cousin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his son-in-law; and he pointed with his hand and said: This is his house, where you see it.

Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to us and we hoped that he would narrate an excellent hadith to us. A man named Hakim said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, what do you say about fighting in a fitnah? He said: May your mother be bereaved of you! Do you even know what fitnah is? Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fight the polytheists, and entering among them (or: into their religion) was the fitnah; it was not like your fighting over kingship.

Abu al-Aliyah al-Bara' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) were sitting when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by them while performing tawaf. One of them said: Is there anyone left better than this man? The other said: Call him. When he (may Allah be pleased with him) had completed his tawaf and offered two rak'ahs, the messenger told him that Abdullah bin al-Zubayr and Abdullah bin Safwan were calling him. He came, and Abdullah bin Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, why do you not pledge allegiance to the Commander of the Faithful, Abdullah bin al-Zubayr? All the people, the people of Iraq and most of the people of Syria have pledged allegiance to him. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I will not pledge allegiance; you have taken up your swords to shed the blood of Muslims.

Sa'id bin Harb al-Abdi said: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Masjid al-Haram during the time of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). Under the obedience of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) were the chiefs of the Khawarij, among them Nafi' bin al-Azraq, Atiyyah bin al-Aswad and Najdah. They sent a man to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask: Why do you not give the pledge of allegiance to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him)? He raised his hand, which was trembling from old age, and said: "By Allah!" I will not give my pledge of allegiance for division, nor will I withhold it from the community.

Abu al-Minhal said: When it was the time of Ibn Ziyad, Marwan seized power in Syria, Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) in Makkah, and those who were called the Qurra' (Qur'an reciters) in Basrah. My father was greatly grieved and said: Let us go to this man, he is a Companion of the Messenger. He came to Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him). He was sitting in a shade in his house because of the heat, so we sat down too. My father said: O Abu Barzah! Do you not see? The first thing he said was: I seek reward from Allah; I am angry with the chiefs of Quraysh. O people of the Arabs! You were living a life of misguidance, error and humiliation; Allah raised you up through Islam and through Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) until you reached the position you now see. This world has ruined you. Marwan, Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and those Qurra' of Basrah are all fighting only for the world. My father asked: Then what should we do now? He said: I now consider the best of people to be that group who cling to their homes; their bellies are empty of people's wealth and their backs are light of the burden of people's blood.

Qays bin Abi Hazim and Amir al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on them) said that Marwan said to Sayyiduna Ayman bin Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him): "Why do you not join us and fight?" He replied: "My father and my paternal uncle, who took part in Badr (may Allah be pleased with them both), took a pledge from me that I would never fight against anyone who recites the testimony of faith. If you give me a guarantee that you will save me from Hell, then I will fight alongside you." Marwan said: "Get out of here." So he left, saying:
I cannot fight anyone who prays;
His is the kingship, and mine would be the sin.
Shall I kill a Muslim without any crime,
For the sake of a ruler, when the other one too is from Quraysh?
I seek refuge in Allah from such ignorance and frenzy;
It would be of no benefit to me my whole life long.
