Al-Zuhri narrates from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is your view about a man who sees another man with his wife: should he kill him? Would you then kill him? Or what should he do?" Thereupon Allah, the Lord of Might, mentioned li'an in the Qur'an. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Judgment has been made concerning you and your wife." The narrator says: The two of them performed li'an, and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). The man said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! If I keep her as my wife, then I have lied against her," and he separated from her. After that, this became the practice: the two who perform li'an are to be separated. The woman was pregnant, and the husband had denied her pregnancy, and the son was attributed to his mother. Then, in inheritance, the mother inherits from the son and the son from the mother, according to the shares Allah Almighty has fixed for them.

Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): We were in the mosque on the night of Friday when a man of the Ansar came and said: "If a man finds another man with his wife: if he speaks, you will flog him; if he kills, you will kill him; and if he stays silent, he will be keeping silent over something that enrages him. By Allah! I will certainly ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The next morning he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him: If a man finds another man with his wife: if he speaks out, you will flog him; if he kills, you will kill him; and if he stays silent, he will be keeping silent over something that enrages him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahumma iftah (O Allah, resolve this matter)," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was supplicating when the verses of li'an were revealed: "And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves" [Surah al-Nur: 6]. This very man was afflicted with it, and the husband and wife came and performed li'an in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The man bore witness four times that he was truthful, and in the fifth oath he said: "The curse of Allah be upon him if he is a liar." The woman came forward for the li'an, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop." She performed the li'an, and when she was leaving, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps she will give birth to a black child with curly hair." And she gave birth to a black child with curly hair.

Abd al-A'la (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Hisham bin Hassan (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about a man who had accused his wife, so Hisham bin Hassan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him): I asked Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, and I thought he had knowledge of it. He said: Hilal bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) accused his wife with Sharik bin Sahma', who was the maternal brother of Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). He was the first person to perform li'an, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out li'an between the two of them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Watch her. If she gives birth to a child who is fair, with straight hair and large eyes, he belongs to Hilal bin Umayyah; and if she gives birth to one with black curly hair and thin shins, he belongs to Sharik bin Sahma'." He says: I was informed that she gave birth to a child with black curly hair and thin shins.
(b) Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates the complete hadith from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had the decree of the Book of Allah not already been made, I would have dealt with her." All these hadiths indicate li'an over a pregnancy.

Al-Qasim bin Muhammad narrates from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the two who performed li'an were mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Asim bin Adi said something about it, then he left. Then a man from his people came to him and mentioned that he had found a man with his wife. Asim said: I have been tested with this only because of what I said. So he brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he told him of the state in which he had found his wife. This man was pale yellow, lean and straight-haired, and the man whom he claimed (to have found with her) was wheat-brown, heavily built and curly-haired. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahumma bayyin (O Allah, make the matter clear)." Then the woman gave birth to a child resembling the man whom her husband had mentioned. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had li'an performed between them. A man in the gathering said to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Was she the woman about whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I were to stone anyone without evidence, it would be this woman"? Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: No, that was another woman, who used to display evil openly in Islam.
Al-Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) says: These narrations give the impression that the li'an was carried out after the delivery, and it is also possible that some narrators related the account of the delivery first and the li'an afterwards. This is the story of Uwaymir al-Ajlani.
(b) Al-Zuhri narrates from Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had li'an performed between them while his wife was pregnant.
Ibn Jurayj narrated this story from Yahya bin Sa'id and placed the li'an before the account of the delivery, like the narration of the group, except that he left Abd al-Rahman bin al-Qasim out of its chain.

Al-Qasim bin Muhammad narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah! I have had no relations with my wife since the palms were first watered." (The narrator) says: 'Afar is that when the palms are pollinated, they are left without water for forty days; they are not watered after pollination. The man said: "I found a man with my wife." Her husband was pale yellow, with thin shins and straight hair, while the man with whom she was accused was of deep black complexion with curly hair. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "Allahumma bayyin (O Allah, make the matter clear)." Then li'an was carried out between the two of them, and the woman gave birth to a child resembling the man with whom she had been accused. Abu al-Zinad narrates from al-Qasim bin Muhammad, and he from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): he (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out li'an between al-Ajlani and his wife while the woman was pregnant, and the man with whom she had been accused was Ibn al-Sahma'.

Al-Qasim bin Muhammad narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): when (li'an) was carried out between al-Ajlani and his wife, his wife was pregnant. Her husband said: I have not gone near her since we finished pollinating the palms. 'Afr means that the palms are not given water for two months after being pollinated. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahumma bayyin (O Allah, make the matter clear)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the husband; he had thin forearms and shins and brownish hair, and the man with whom she was accused was Sharik bin Sahma'. The woman gave birth to a child who was black, with kohl-dark eyes, curly hair, stout forearms and full shins. Al-Qasim says: Ibn Shaddad bin al-Had said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Is this the woman about whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I were to stone anyone without evidence, I would have stoned this woman"? He said: No; rather, that one openly committed evil in Islam.
(b) Ibn Abi al-Zinad narrates from his father, with the same chain, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out li'an between al-Ajlani and his wife while she was pregnant, and her husband had said: I have not gone near her since pollinating the palms. He says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahumma bayyin (O Allah, make this matter clear)," and they claimed that her husband had thin forearms.
