Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stay with Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) to drink honey. So Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) and I agreed between ourselves that whichever of us the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to should say: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), have you eaten maghafir, for its smell is coming from you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) went to one of them, and she said this to him (peace and blessings be upon him): that its smell was coming from him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I drank honey with Zaynab, but I will not drink it again." So this verse was revealed: "O Prophet, why do you forbid what Allah has made lawful for you?" [Surah al-Tahrim: 1] ("Why do you forbid what Allah has made lawful for you?"), and "If you two turn in repentance to Allah" [Surah al-Tahrim: 4] was said for Aishah and Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with them both), and "And when the Prophet confided a statement to one of his wives" [Surah al-Tahrim: 3] ("And when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said a private word to one of his wives"), namely that "I had only drunk honey."
(b) Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) in this hadith that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will never drink it again. I have sworn an oath, but do not tell anyone about it."
(c) Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said about this incident that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, I will not drink it." He reported that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had sworn an oath, so the obligation of expiation relates to the oath, not to the declaring forbidden.

Hisham narrates from his father that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) loved honey and sweet things. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the Asr prayer, he would visit all his wives. He went to Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and stayed with her longer than he used to stay with the other wives. I felt jealous and asked about it, and I was told that a woman of her people had given her a skin of honey as a gift, and she gave him a drink of it. I said: "By Allah, we will surely devise a plan for him." So I said to Sayyidah Sawdah bint Zam'ah (may Allah be pleased with her): "When he (peace and blessings be upon him) comes near you and enters your house, say to him: 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), have you eaten maghafir (a pungent herb)?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) will say to you: 'No.' Then say: 'What is this smell that is coming from you?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) will say: 'Hafsah gave me a drink of honey.' Then say: 'Its bees must have sucked from the urfut plant.' I too will say the same. And you, O Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), must say it too." The narrator said: Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "By Allah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) had hardly stood at the door when I wanted to call out to him what you had instructed me, out of fear of you." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came near Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), have you eaten maghafir?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." She said: "Then what is this smell that I perceive from you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hafsah gave me a drink of honey." She said: "Perhaps its bees sucked from the urfut plant." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came round to me, I said the same thing to him. When he went to Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), she also said the same. When he went to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), shall I not give you some honey to drink?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have no need of it." The narrator said: Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her: "Subhan Allah! By Allah, we have deprived him of it." I said to her: "Be quiet." [Sahih. Agreed upon]

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: An udder was brought to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said to the people: "Come near and eat." They began to eat. One man was off to the side. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Come near." He said: "I do not want it." He asked: "Why?" He said: "Because I have declared udder forbidden to myself." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is one of the footsteps of Satan. Allah says: 'O you who believe, do not forbid the good things that Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress; indeed Allah does not love the transgressors.' [Surah al-Ma'idah: 87] Come near and eat, and make expiation for your oath, for this is one of the footsteps of Satan."
