Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Syria and saw that the people there prostrated to their priests, so he thought to himself that he would do the same for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he returned, he began to prostrate to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) disapproved of it. He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I went to Syria and the people there were prostrating to their priests, so I thought to myself that I would do the same for you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I were to command anyone to prostrate, I would tell the woman to prostrate to her husband. By the One in whose hand is my soul! A woman cannot fulfil the right of Allah until she fulfils the right of her husband. If he asks her for his need, even while she is on a camel saddle, she should come to him," or he said: "she should not refuse him."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that a woman asked: What is the right of the husband over his wife? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She should not withhold herself from him, even if she is on a mount; and she should not give anything from the house without his permission; if you do so, the husband gets the reward and you get the sin. She should not keep even one day's voluntary fast without his permission; if you do so, you will be sinful and will not be rewarded. And she should not go out of the house without the husband's permission; if you do so, the angels of wrath and the angels of mercy will keep cursing her until she repents or returns." It was said: Even if the husband is a wrongdoer? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if he is a wrongdoer."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to permit anyone whom her husband dislikes to enter his house, nor to go out of the house while he is displeased, nor to obey anyone else, nor to harden his heart, nor to separate from his bed and abandon him. Even if he is a wrongdoer, she should still please him. If he accepts her apology, that is better for her; Allah, the Lord of Might, will also accept her excuse and make her argument prevail, and there will be no sin upon her. And if he refuses to be pleased, she has conveyed her excuse to Allah."
