Abu Ubaydah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the sermon for a need (khutbat al-hajah): 'Alhamdu lillah, nahmaduhu wa nasta'inuhu wa nastaghfiruhu, wa na'udhu billahi min shururi anfusina, man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah, wa ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (All praise is for Allah. Indeed, all praise is for Allah. We seek His help and His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls. Whomever Allah, the Lord of Might, guides, none can lead him astray, and whomever Allah leads astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite these three verses: "O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul and created from it its mate" [Surah al-Nisa': 1]; "O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared" [Surah Al Imran: 102]; "O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words that are right; He will set right your deeds for you and forgive you your sins, and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great success" [Surah al-Ahzab: 70-71]. "After that, one should mention one's need." Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Abu Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him): Is this for the marriage sermon or for other things too? He said: For every need.

Isra'il (may Allah have mercy on him) also mentioned similar to it, but he says: "O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul and created from it its mate and spread from them both many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and (respect) the ties of kinship. Indeed, Allah is ever a Watcher over you" [Surah al-Nisa': 1]. After this he mentioned the other two verses, but he did not say that one should then speak about one's need.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that whenever he delivered a sermon he would say: "All praise is for Allah. We seek His help and His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead him astray, and whomever Allah leads astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. Allah has sent him before the Hour as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has succeeded, and whoever disobeys will harm only himself and will not harm Allah in the least."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us the tashahhud and the sermon just as (he taught us) a surah of the Qur'an: "'At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh' (All bodily and financial acts of worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger); and the sermon: 'Innal-hamda lillahi nahmaduhu wa nasta'inuhu wa nastaghfiruhu, wa ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wa anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh' (All praise is for Allah; we praise Him, and we seek His help and His forgiveness. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger); 'And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and (respect) the ties of kinship. Indeed, Allah is ever a Watcher over you' [Surah al-Nisa': 1]; 'O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words that are right' [Surah al-Ahzab: 70]; 'He will set right your deeds for you and forgive you your sins, and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great success' [Surah al-Ahzab: 71]."
