Abu Ubaydah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the sermon for a need (khutbat al-hajah): 'Alhamdu lillah, nahmaduhu wa nasta'inuhu wa nastaghfiruhu, wa na'udhu billahi min shururi anfusina, man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lah, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lah, wa ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (All praise is for Allah. Indeed, all praise is for Allah. We seek His help and His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls. Whomever Allah, the Lord of Might, guides, none can lead him astray, and whomever Allah leads astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite these three verses: "O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul and created from it its mate" [Surah al-Nisa': 1]; "O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared" [Surah Al Imran: 102]; "O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words that are right; He will set right your deeds for you and forgive you your sins, and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great success" [Surah al-Ahzab: 70-71]. "After that, one should mention one's need." Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Abu Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him): Is this for the marriage sermon or for other things too? He said: For every need.
