Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Hunayn, the people intended to ask him (for wealth). They surrounded his she-camel (for this purpose), and a tree snatched away his cloak. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Return my cloak to me. Do you fear that I will be miserly? If Allah Almighty gave me as fay' livestock as numerous as the dates of Tihamah, I would distribute them among you, and you would not find me miserly, cowardly or a liar." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took a tuft of hair from the hump of his camel and said: "I have nothing of the fay' that Allah Almighty has given you, not even the like of this, except the khumus (one-fifth), and that too is returned to you. Regard returning even the thread and the needle as obligatory, for betrayal (in the spoils) is shame and disgrace."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when Allah Almighty granted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the fay' that was gained from the wealth of the tribe of Hawazin on the day of Hunayn, he (peace and blessings be upon him) began giving men of his own people a hundred camels each. A man from the Ansar said: "May Allah forgive His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)! He (peace and blessings be upon him) gives to Quraysh and leaves us out, that is, deprives us, while our swords are still dripping with their blood." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for the Ansar and gathered them in a tent of leather, and did not leave anyone else with them. When they had gathered, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked about the talk that had reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) from them. The men of understanding among the Ansar said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Those of us who are men of sound judgement did not say this. It was said by those who are young in age; they said: May Allah Almighty forgive His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)! He (peace and blessings be upon him) gives to Quraysh and has deprived us, while blood is still dripping from our swords." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I give to people who have recently left disbelief, in order to win their hearts. Are you not pleased that the people go home with wealth while you go back to your homes with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "By Allah! What you take back is better than what they take back." Then they said: "Certainly, O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After me you will meet with severe preference (of others over you), so be patient until you meet Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), for I will be at the Pond (Hawd)."
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: But we did not remain patient.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) that some wealth came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to his people and deprived others. It reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) that the people had objected to this, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I give to one man and leave another, and the one whom I leave out is dearer to me than the one whom I give. I give wealth to those in whose hearts there is anxiety, alarm and impatience, and I leave out those whose hearts Allah has made free of need." Among them was Sayyiduna Amr bin Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Amr bin Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that these words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were dearer to me than even red camels.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a piece of gold from Yemen to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) divided it among four men: al-Aqra' bin Habis al-Hanzali, Uyaynah bin Hisn al-Fazari, Alqamah bin Ulathah al-Amiri and Zayd al-Khayl al-Ta'i. The chiefs of Quraysh became angry and said: "You give to the people of Najd but deprive us!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I did this only to win their hearts." Then a man came who had a thick beard, swollen cheeks, sunken eyes, a protruding forehead and a shaven head. He said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Fear Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I disobey Allah, then who obeys Him? He has made me trustworthy over the earth, and you do not consider me trustworthy." Then that man went away. A man among the people asked permission to kill him (and perhaps that man was Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him)), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, from the offspring of this man will come people who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will kill the people of Islam and leave the idol-worshippers alone, and they will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes out of the bow. If I were to find them, I would certainly kill them as the people of Ad were killed."
