It is narrated from the family of Abdullah bin Safwan that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Safwan! Do you have any weapons?" Safwan said: 'Ariyah (as a loan), or by force? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As a loan." He says: I lent between thirty and forty coats of armour to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fought the Battle of Hunayn. When the polytheists were defeated, the coats of armour of Safwan were gathered, and some of the coats were missing. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Safwan! Some of your coats of armour have been lost by us; do we owe you any compensation?" He said: No, O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), because today there is in my heart what was not there that day.

It is narrated from al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to Safwan bin Umayyah concerning some weapons which had been mentioned to him as being with him, and asked him for them. Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Where is the guarantee? Will you take them by force? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, keep your weapons; and if you lend them to me, I am responsible for them until they are returned." Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There is no harm in this; I lend them to you. So that day he gave them to him; some people claim it was a hundred coats of armour along with their equipment. Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) had a great deal of weaponry. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Spare us the carrying of them." So Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) carried them. Then he mentioned the Battle of Hunayn, in which it is (stated) that a man of Quraysh passed by Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Rejoice at the defeat of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions. Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Do you give me the good news of the victory of the Bedouins? By Allah! A lord from Quraysh is dearer to me than a lord from the Bedouins. Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) sent his slave and said: Listen, whose battle cry is it? The slave came and said: I heard them saying: "Ya bani Abd al-Rahman, ya bani Abdillah, ya bani Ubaydillah" (O sons of Abd al-Rahman, O sons of Abdullah, O sons of Ubaydullah). Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has prevailed. That was their battle cry in war.

Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) undertook the campaign of the Conquest of Makkah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah in the month of Ramadan. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) a hundred camels, then a hundred, then a hundred. Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to me that Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me what he gave me while he was the most hated of all people to me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept giving to me until he (peace and blessings be upon him) became the most beloved of all people to me.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked for anything, he would certainly give it. A man came and asked him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be given the goats that were between two mountains. When he went back to his people, he said: "O my people! Become Muslims, for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gives so much that he does not even fear poverty."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the goats that were between two mountains, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them to him. He came to his people and said: "Become Muslims, for by Allah! Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gives like one who has no fear of poverty." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man would accept Islam wanting nothing but the world, and he would hardly have accepted Islam before Islam became dearer to him than the world and everything in it.
