Ahnaf bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was among a group of Quraysh when Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, saying: "Give the hoarders of treasure the glad tidings of a branding which will be placed on their backs and come out of their sides, and which will be placed on the napes of their necks and come out of their foreheads." Then he went aside and sat down. I said: Who is this? They said: This is Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). I got up, went to him and said to him: What was it that I just heard you saying? He said: I was only saying what I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: What do you say about this stipend? He said: Keep taking it, for there is help in it; then when it becomes the price of your religion, leave it.
The part about the stipend is mawquf (stopping at the Companion), and it has been narrated through another route as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet).

Mutayr went out to perform Hajj. When they were at al-Suwayda', a man came as if looking for medicine or for hudad (a medicinal extract), and said: The one who heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed me that during the Farewell Hajj he (peace and blessings be upon him) was admonishing the people, enjoining good upon them and forbidding them from evil, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Take the stipend (of the ruler) as long as it is a stipend; but when Quraysh fight one another over kingship, and it comes at the cost of one of you's religion, then leave it."

Sulaym bin Mutayr narrates from his father, who lived in Wadi al-Qura, that he heard a man who had heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): he (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined good upon the people and forbade them from evil, then said: "O Allah! I have conveyed Your message." The people said: Yes, you have conveyed it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the people of Quraysh fight among themselves for the sake of rule, and the stipend becomes a bribe, then leave it." The people said: Who is this man? It became known that he was Dhu al-Zawa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
